Description In 1972 two aircraft prototypes were submited to the “U.S. Air Force Lightweight Fighter programme”, looking for a useful, significantly smaller and cheaper fighter than the F-15 .
The state of advancing tactics of air combat on the second half of the century emphazised on turn rate, acceleration, and range rather than high speed, a lesson well learned in Vietnam where the small size of Soviet build fighters had given them advantage over the larger more powerfull U.S. fighters like the F-4 Phantom.

The General Dynamics 402 ( YF-16) prototype won the contract in 1974. Pilot Phil Oestricher flew the first YF-16 test flight on the 20th of January of the same year.

All the possible advantages of the emerging technologies of the time were applied to the development of the F-16 resulting in one of the most important combat aircraft of the rest of the century.

This illustrations shows an F-16D (Block 52) of the FACh flying over a mining facility at the desrt on the north of Chile.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brilliant work on this one! I remember reading an article where some USAF f-15 pilots did some joint training with the Chilean Air Force and they weren't expecting the Chileans to use the f-16 to full potential since they just had them delivered. They were very wrong as they kept getting knocked out of the sky by the Chilean vipers.

One thing though, at risk of sounding like a douche, the pilot doesn't appear to be wearing the JHMCS helmet that Chilean Block 52 vipers seem to use. Mind you, it may just be the angle in which the pilot is looking at.

Sorry I've been so inattentive. I'm thrilled to see new work from you, and the time you spent on it is obvious in the detail. I wish I could afford that commission we talked about before, but I certainly haven't forgotten about it!
