Description The bear had soft gentle eyes, despite his impressive stature; he looked like he'd seen fleeting days and long days and had remembered them all. The bear's wisdom and compassion was not simply seen, it was felt. He had the might of one of the old guardians but possessed the depth of an ocean, wandering with a young man's step and an old man's complexity. The bear watched over the earth like Grandfather Time, standing sentinel and seeing.

Somehow I missed writing these little paragraphs in the artist's comments. And it just felt... necessary for this one. I'm a loony, forgive me.
Anywho~
Whaaaaaaaat? Llama is submitting twice in three days?!?! Unheard of!

Yes, my friends, another drawing. This time, a black bear for my dad. The bear is something of a symbol of strength for my family, and there's something so powerful but gentle about bears in general that I really just love drawing them. I have a small issue with the nose-- which is too pointed-- but I actually really like this one.
Hopefully you all do as well~!

Black and white charcoal on paper. HippieLlama. December 2011.

this is an amazing drawing, it's one of my favourite drawings of a bear, everything you wrote about it is true. his gentleness, his thoughtful composure..
I love it. It's like the thing that I am missing in my own life.

Will it be ok with you if I have this tattooed?

Thank you so much!!!
Bears have this great... grounded sense to them. They always seem balanced, no matter what they're doing or how old they are, or what they've been through. They're strong, and powerful, but also gentle, and wise. They kind of have a spiritual sort of importance, for me at least. I know what you mean.

You can definitely have this tattooed. -- see the note I sent you for more info.

Thanks again! Happy Tuesday!

The paragraph is really good! Wonderful rich descriptive language, it flows almost like a poem, and great use of metaphors too! It's one thing I noticed about certain animals- at first glance they look dumb, cute or vicious, but when you properly take a look at their face it seems that the wisdom of centuries is concealed in their eyes. You drew the eye so well; it looks so sorrowful, intelligent, I even imagine a bit of longing in there... and great job on the fur, it's really realistic!
I am also behind on messages >_< twice in three days??¬!?!?!?!!?? please refrain from submitting so often, I have to say I am deeply shocked and disappointed in you!

Heh-heh, thank you. It's not very typical of my writing style, but I used to write a lot of poetry when I was younger (mostly satirical poems... I had a couple published in little anthologies), so sometimes I'm seized by the desperate urge to write strangely. XD Usually my writing is like how I speak-- kinda choppy, lots of dashes, and way too many sidestories.

I agree! Some animals just have a look about them that makes them seem more human-ish, I guess. I always thought that about bears, rabbits, dogs, and rhinos, especially. XD
Yes, I'm strange enough that I have a list of animals with soulful eyes. XD

And thank you!! I always love using charcoal for animals-- it makes them seem more realistic because it's easy to get the fur texture.

I just can't keep up!! D8
I know, I don't know what my problem is. Shame on me.

ooh really? I've always entered those poetry competitions where the winning entries are published in an anthology but I've never been successful >3<
I agree with the first three, but rhinos? I never really thought about them as being particularly human! also, tortoises definitely look human, or even more than human.
Bahh I envy your charcoal skills- I always always end up smudging it all over the page! XD
I should hope so! Now go sit on the naughty step and have a nice long think about what you've done!

I got lucky twice.XD Don't give up! I like your writing-- I bet your poetry is great. 8D

Tortoises! And turtles. **is ashamed at forgetting favorite animal**
We used to visit this sort of zoo/park every year when I was a kid, and they had rhinos there. And my mom and I thought that their eyes made them look... humanish somehow?
Charcoal erasers save my life.

SHAME ON YOU!!
charcoal erasers? how do they work? o-o

Charcoal erasers? Well, they work like a regular eraser (not great quality, but it helps fade the charcoal or clean up smudges), but has a clay-like texture. Here's a picture of a used one-- the left eraser is kneaded but unused, and the one on the right is very much used: [link]

Aw, thank you so much!! I like charcoal-- it's one of the first drawing media I ever used. I usually do a lot more with it, but my charcoal set was annihilated, so I need a new one. Saving up for that.
