Thanks!
It's one of the oldest versions of the anime, plus one of the newest versions of 001, the kid.
I was almost a baby when they aired "Cyborg 009" on TV, and it was the 1970s style series.

Their uniforms. They are all cyborgs, so their clothes are parts of their own bodies and they work together with their powers. So, if Jet or Joe run, their dress will never get ripped. If Chang spits fire, his dress will never get burnt, ans so on.
The yellow buttons are not only decorations: they work as real machine-commands.
Theyb can decide when they want to activate or deactivate them.

I only watched the 1970-80s series. I put some different details, though. For an example, I did not like the fact 001 had to be always stuck in a baby cot, so I took the 001 from the new series I found all around the web; the problem is that his body is too weak to bear such a great power, so, most of time, he's asleep somewhere, or guarded by 003. Again, about 008, I really did not like his old design: those thick lips and charged festures may be not meant to offend anyone, but I think they're too comic-like for such a dramatic story. I did not change 002's old design, but I tried to make him less 2 D and more 3 D, and more serious, like I saw in wikipedia's summary of the new Cyborg series, where he and 009 are rivals.
So strange that the worst result has been on 009...
These dramatic stories and atmospheres, plus the great Italian opening by Nico Fidenco, are the very first alphabet of my actual emotional language.
My first thought was to change old 1970s style with my personal one. Maybe I will, someday, but now I decided that a tiny mix of old and new had to be better: characters have to be easy to reckognise. Too many personal details could make them impossible to spot both by old viewers and by new ones.

I can't remember which version of the series I saw. Maybe I need to watch more of it but while I liked the premise the characters didn't pull me in.

Maybe you saw the new one, in which Jet was made in a realy better style, but the story was all about his rivalry with Joe Shimamura.
There had been many different series, with different styles.
But the point was that the story was based almost only on the war between the cyborgs and the Black Ghost, the same organization which gave them their weird powers, first.
The drama was the core of the whole thing: they DID NOT want to get any power, they were all forced to. One of the scientists who made this masterpiece, changed his mind, and became their menthor and even a sorta of father, doctor Gilmore.
The new series seems to be all based on a great graphic and on the fact authors had to give the only female character, Françoise, a preminent role, that she never have been having in all the previous ones.
It means that they did not work on characters or on the story, but they worked just on what they thought a viewer's expectations could be.
I agree to the fact that Françoise was a bit maltreated in old series and she had to get a better role, but this does not mean that she has to make all episodes boring;
I really like Jet's new style, but I prefer the old one, as the new one reminds me he's been used not to be cool, but just to fulfill some expectations.
And those three, Joe, Françoise and Jet put a shadow on all other cyborgs.
Old series saw them as a team, in spite all rivalry, their difference or race, nationality and background. In old series they looked like a family. In the new one... they don't.

Thank you!
The drawing design is taken from the 1979-80 series, the one I grew up with; some details, instead, are personal: I customized their uniforms, so everyone can have his/her one (if the size is not enough, of coruse ). I made the kid, 001, out of his baby cot, but I mantained his hidden eyes and the pacifier.
I also took a certain detail from the new series, but I mantained the old one atmosphere and look.
This series started from a manga, in 1967-68, and the character-design was a bit weird. It resambled a bit AstroBoy (both in good and bad features). From black-white to colors, even characters have been changed a lot, and lot of times, expecially Bretagna (Britain, literally), Pyunma and Ivan.
