Description Mario - This half dwarf blacksmith has a barbarian's rage when in battle, especially when someone goes after his younger brother, Luigi.

Mario practically raised his younger brother, even though he's only a few years older and he's taken on a large number of odd jobs to keep food on the table. Mario has worked on several construction projects (and fought a monster/rescued a girl), worked as a plumber (and fought several creatures) and has even been the referee in a bare knuckle fight club. He likes racing in his spare time.

It seems that every little job he has turns into a "rescue the damsel in distress/fight the evil monster" kinda thing. (Kinda like Indiana Jones)

When he got old enough, Luigi helped. But Mario insisted that his studies come first. Still, Luigi's helped on several of these projects and has even taken on a few side jobs of his own, like dealing with a haunter mansion.

It's during one of these jobs that Luigi is captured by thieves (led by an unknown and unseen mastermind) brainwashed and turned into an unwilling ally.

When they're captured trying to break into the unbreakable wizarding bank of Gringotts, the thieves claimed that Luigi, calling himself "Mr. L", was the mastermind. It was all his idea, he recruited them and threatened them if they turned on him. With all of the evidence against him and no proof of the magical tampering, Luigi was sent to Azkaban Prison to be executed.

When Mario heard about this, he was outraged. Not at Luigi (he KNEW he was innocent), not at the thieves but at the person who got Luigi involved. To learn who set him up and to eventually clear his name, Mario would have to free his little brother before he has an "accident" in prison or is killed intentionally.

Having been involved in various parts of Azkaban's construction, he knows that breaking into the prison is impossible. But breaking OUT is only almost impossible. So he does what any good brother would do... commits a crime to get himself locked away in the same prison, so that they can escape together.

And the story of their prison break.... well, that's a story for another time.

In case you're curious...Azkaban is a grey tower, a prison structure built to be able to hold the most powerful wizards around, up to and including the Dark Lord if need be (if he was still alive, of course). Along with the many powerful Furies guarding the building (guardian creatures called Dementors who suck all happy feelings out of you, ensuring that prisoners go depressed or insane long before they can escape), the prison's guards, the Grey Guard, are hand picked for loyalty to the Realm and have never taken a bribe in over 500 years due either to honesty or the fact that they can receive twice the amount of the bribe by turning in the person who tried it.

Mario & Luigi (and the allies they were forced to recruit) were successful because Azkaban was initially designed to specifically contain and neutralize magic use. As was the case with a lot of wizardy engineering, no one ever even considered the possibility that someone would be insane enough to attempt a breakout without using magic, which is exactly how they did it.

During the escape, Mario and Luigi found themselves separated. Luigi reluctantly found himself taking the place of a fallen brand new guard (who, before the guard was badly burned, disguising any differences), shared more than a passing resemblance. It turns out that this guard, Waluigi, was a mole for the Dark One.

Now, between working in the prison and reporting to the Death Dealers (acting as though he's been addled and recovering from head trauma to explain any inconsistencies)... Luigi has a very dangerous charade to maintain.

Mario, however, is on his own. He's still a fugitive (as he originally committed a crime & escaped from prison) and is laying low. But he's still trying to clear his brother's name and bring his kidnappers to justice.

So many questions still remain unanswered... who originally brainwashed Luigi? Why plan a crime that was meant to fail to get him sent to prison? Was the breakout also part of the villain's plan? If so, was the plan successful or was the subject recaptured? One of the prison guards basically being Luigi's evil twin... coincidence? Or something else? Was he wrong about his brother? Was the brainwashing a lie and "Mr. L" the truth? That would be one explanation for the appearance of a twin and his new role, right?

Mario didn't even know where to begin.

This is when the Dungeon Master found him, offered him magical weaponry and allies to help him with his cause.

Thanks to Mario's dwarfish background, he has a greater tolerance for fire and heat than the others (explains his wardrobe), but doesn't deal with the cold that well.

He knows how to build a variety of devices (some that allow personal flight or to swim without needing air), but they are often damaged in battle. As evidenced in his time in prison, he can MacGyver almost anything from mundane materials.
