I could not agree more. I love the older/vintage dragon and dinosaur looks like the one in the Sinbad movie and the one you drew here. Yours is near perfect to my taste, what a nice piece of work!

I appreciate that! I like the dragon from Sinbad movie, too. Good design and very nice effects for those days.

That dragon in Harryhausen's Sindbad was pretty awesome, I have to say. At least to my taste. And John Howe's art is great. As for me, I can't say that I have some dedicated source of inspiration but all in all, I take inspiration in 'classic' fantasy art (Boris Vallejo etc.), paleontology and general observation of nature. With dragons I've begun with more 'traditional' (a.k.a. european dragon) look and now use more 'animalistic' look (pterosaur traits in flying dragons and varan/crocodile traits in land dragons).

I like those designs! Both land and winged dragons.
I myself started with winged dragons (and all kinds of giant serpents) so when I decided to draw a land one I actually faced problems (which were aggravated by my inconsistent knowledge of anatomy and general lack of skill). But winged dragons must be generally harder to draw due to more complex geometry.

Well, some of the prehistoric beasts are pretty much those mythological monsters. So it's not impossible to construct a more believable creature. Of course, it won't be like something that could hypothetically 'come out of a petri dish' in a dozen of decades in the future but it would be reasonably believable. To my taste it's better to leave more constrains than to be carried away completely into the land of surreal, cartoonish and over the top.

In this interpretation he's basically a huge varan. I though that using 'less if best' principle would be a good thing. No need in giant long spikes, ridiculously heavy horns, excessively pronouncing plates etc.

I agree. Even as a land species, due of his large size and armour like skin he woun't need to develop such features on the way of the evolution.Β
