Another for the sea monster collection "Omnidens" was a giant lobopodian (related to today's velvet worms) which may have grown up to maybe 2 m long, although only its mouth apparatus is known (practically identical to that of the smaller Pambdelurion; it may be just a giant species of the latter). If this interpretation is correct, then it would've been one of the largest known Cambrian animals, and easily the oldest sea monster I've doodled thus far

If you think about it, Primeval actually predicted this monstrosity. Or the concept of giant worms living in the Cambrian at least, minus the sulphur air and parasitic babies part.

HodariNundu In reply to M-Baskerville [2019-07-13 23:36:27 +0000 UTC]

IIRC the worms from Primeval actually look sort of like priapulids, so maybe inspired by them, or even by Omnidens itself which was once thought to be a giant priapulid? The show aired shortly after Omnidens was first described...

Even then, I think it's quite a funny coincidence.

Not to sound childish but this Omnidens looks the result of what happens when a Megalograptus and a centipede play seven minutes in heaven.

Cool, yes, but couldn’t it NOT be the size of a small car? I don’t think I would be AMAZINGLY happy if it appeared from underneath the seafloor behind me.

FluffyRex In reply to HodariNundu [2019-07-13 23:40:10 +0000 UTC]

Only issue is it would probably see a human as a threat. And just to clarify in case you didn’t get the joke, I was doing a “Burn it with fire” joke that people make with large bugs.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HodariNundu In reply to FluffyRex [2019-07-14 00:04:11 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... would it? How much could they see, to begin with? And if it could see, would it react to us in fright, seeing as it would have never seen or sensed anything quite like us? Maybe it wouldn´t care. When Darwin arrived to the Galapagos and other islands during his voyage, many animals were completely unafraid.

I hate the burn it with fire joke, but that's because I'm a naturalist who has seen far too many beautiful, sometimes rare bugs squashed or harmed by ignorant people. :/

The recent re-assessment as a Lobopodian might bring the length down closer to 1.5 meters, the 2 meter estimate was from when it was thought to be a penis-worm.

I figured.   I don´t think a 2 m long one is beyond possibility in any case, but even so I put the diver behind the worm so that the size would remain uncertain.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Boverisuchus In reply to HodariNundu [2019-07-06 06:03:11 +0000 UTC]

Well all we have is a mouth, so it could have been either really. Still 1.5 meters is definitely one of the biggest Cambrian animals.

Incidentally there is an Anomalocarid mouth"Peytoia" thing at the South Australian Museum here in Adelaide that beats this, it's not on display but I have seen it. It's not published at all for some reason and no one seems interested in describing it unfortunately. But the actual circular mouth is similar in diameter to a soccer ball, so it would have been a big one, but the scientists there have warned that we don't know if it was a big animal with a normal mouth or a smaller animal with a huge mouth. My jaw hit the floor when I saw it, because I figured it was a jellyfish. The fact we now have Aegirocassis means that this sort of thing is easier to understand being possible now though.
