A tiger (Panthera tigris) and a sabercat (Hemimachairodus zwierzyckii) face off in some remote corner of Sundaland, what will one day become Indonesia, during the Pleistocene.
The tiger coexisted with at least two machairodontines in south east Asia; Homotherium and Hemimachairodus. Homotherium prefered more open habitats, which is why the competition between the tiger and this scimitar cat was minimal. On the other hand, a recent study suggested that Hemimachairodus (of which no postcranial elements are known, hence its uncertain classification although it seems to have been more modestly sized than the tiger, perhaps akin to a large jaguar) was ecologically much similar to the tiger, and competed with it directly. As time went on, tigers became larger and more dominant, which along with habitat shifts may have directly influenced other competing carnivores. For example, the large canid Megacyon (Xenocyon?) dissappeared and was replaced by the much smaller Mececyon which could live off smaller prey (it might even be that Mececyon WAS Megacyon, but it shrank rapidly to cope with increased competition), whereas Hemimachairodus ended up dissappearing completely. If this was due to competition with tigers and other carnivores, or other factors, is not known for certain. In any case, Hemimachairodus, if valid, seems to have been among the last Asian sabercats.
