Description The Himalayan legend says
there are beautiful white birds
that live completely in flight.
They are born in the air,

must learn to fly before falling
and die also in their flying.
Maybe you have been born
into such a life

with the bottom dropping out.

–from "In Flight" by Jennifer K. Sweeney

The placement of that one feather is perfect …. singularly perfect.

I'm glad you noticed!  I must have fiddled with it for ages, trying to get the placement right.  In the end, I put a grid of thirds over the picture, and put the feather right at an intersection point.  (The joys of Photoshop!)

Journal on design grids is here: hogret.deviantart.com/journal/...

I just trust my eye, if it looks right, it’s right.

But I know what it’s like to fiddle with a piece for hours!

Is there a word for something both beautiful and sad? Because that's the word I need to describe this. Lovely, yet melancholy.

this is interesting and beautiful. I like using parts of paintings myself and I like your background texture/s very much. Did they/it come from a deviantArt stockist?

I always visit the pages of those who comment on my works, and I am glad I did this time.

Thanks for the generous comment!  I construct my backgrounds out of multiple layers of photographs and textures (sometimes as many as 15 layers of varying density and opacity) -  some of my own, some purchased from outside dA.  I like building up a sense of depth and density - partly as a result of my start in traditional collage where backgrounds took days and days of inks and paints and different techniques!

Lovely! Your style reminds me a bit Claudine Hellmuth's earlier collages (the ones she did when she was not so well-known... nowadays you can't even see them anywere unless you have her book at home ); loved those ones as well as yours.

That's a huge compliment indeed! Claudine Hellmuth started me off on collage, and I own both her books. It's been interesting to try to achieve the traditional collage effects using Photoshop.

KingaBritschgi In reply to hogret [2013-07-13 12:06:26 +0000 UTC]

That is such a coincidence: way back then, I started on collages, etc because of Claudine too! I came across her on the internet, NOBODY knew her then. I even wrote to her asking about her techniques, etc. (and she very generously shared a lot of tips with me). Then gradually she became pretty well-known and changed her style but I still LOVE her earlier works and yes, I do own both of her books too

Anyhow, as I said, love your collages.
