Description "Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes" ~ Thoreau

Four-spread folder, 6" x 6", for *lizole in the #Daughters-Of-A-Dog collaborative project.

George Petty 1940's pinup, collage, marker pens, stickers, fabric tape, metal milagros.

The full quote:
"I say, beware of all enterprises that require new clothes, and not rather a new wearer of clothes. If there is not a new man, how can the new clothes be made to fit? If you have any enterprise before you, try it in your old clothes. All men want, not something to do with, but something to do, or rather something to be. Perhaps we should never procure a new suit, however ragged or dirty the old, until we have so conducted, so enterprised or sailed in some way, that we feel like new men in the old, and that to retain it would be like keeping new wine in old bottles. Our moulting season, like that of the fowls, must be a crisis in our lives. The loon retires to solitary ponds to spend it. Thus also the snake casts its slough, and the caterpillar its wormy coat, by an internal industry and expansion; for clothes are but our outmost cuticle and mortal coil. Otherwise we shall be found sailing under false colors, and be inevitably cashiered at last by our own opinion, as well as that of mankind." Walden

You're killing me here! The whole spread is amazingly well done, but it's the wedding dress that has me going nuts.

It had me nuts too - each fold and strip is separately cut and glued - took the whole day to get the glue out from under my fingernails. Used pages from three books - Japanese, French, Portuguese - I have no clue what the words say, hope it's nothing rude or utterly banal!

I was wondering if that had been the case, that each had been done separately, and it looks so seamless. What glue did you use?

I love the visual interest the different texts give. As for what it all means, I'm gonna treat it like I do music, and enjoy the emotional truth.

I used a glue stick - started with a card cutout in the dress shape and then layered the pleats and pieces over it.

I love fashion, I love wit, and I especially love the baby bottle... I infer that being born is also an enterprise requiring new clothes. This has got to be the ultimate sardonic use of Thoreau's quip! Wonderful!

Oh wow, I hadn't thought of that. Yes we arrive with no clothes ... and then promptly get decked out in pink, even if we'd rather wear black!

very cool Hogret! That doll has the figure I have always wanted. I doubt she kept it after she had the baby. that wedding dress is so cool, there should be one made of paper, how cool would that be.

A wedding dress of paper would be appropriately ephemeral!
