Description The Unwanted Ending

Rating: PG-13 for Adult themes.

Summary: A sad and unwanted ending to a love story.

Disclaimer: I do not own anything having to do with Naruto. If I did, Sasuke and Sai would be constantly shirtless and wearing tight black jeans with chains...Drool... XD

It was to be a private execution, away from the prying eyes of the public. Sasuke Uchiha, after being fairly trialled for treason, had been sentenced to death through medical influence of the chakra flows. It was painless, and that was the only condolence that the last member of the Uchiha clan could earn from his earlier years as an ally to the village.

His former teammates and sensei were beside themselves with grief at the sentence, but none of the male members were hit as hard as the only female in the group.

Sakura pushed a hand to her tearing eyes as she helped prepare the necessary numbing serums that were to be used in the execution, so that the accused would not be able to fight off the assigned doctor as they performed the procedure. A tear fell and landed on the bed that was to be Sasuke’s final prison, for they were to keep him strapped to the bed until the numbing serums fully took effect, which could take a few days.

The door to the small hospital room opened to reveal the newly-elected Hokage. Naruto swallowed in sorrow at the sight of his friend, who had long since finished her task and had taken to just staring at the bed in the room as tears ran down her cheeks.

“Sakura-chan?”

The kunoichi jerked, then looked up at the young man. “Naruto?” she sniffed. “Is it really happening? Am I dreaming this nightmare?”

Naruto sighed, then took a step forward. “You know better than I do as a medic-nin that this is not a dream. I tried all that I could in my power, but the council was adamant in their decision.”

Sakura fiercely rubbed away another tear. “It just doesn’t seem fair. He helped to defeat the Akatsuki! What else does the council need to prove that he is on our side?”

Naruto shook his head. “That, I do not know. But I came here to tell you that you’ve been granted a visit to his cell. It’s only for an hour, but since this is the last close-to-normal day for him, please take advantage of whatever time you have with him.”

Sakura turned to fully face her friend and former teammate. “You knew?” A simple question, but it dared to wonder how much Naruto really knew.

Naruto raised an eyebrow. “Sakura-chan, I’ve known for a very long time that you were ‘sleeping with the enemy’ out on missions. Personally, I was just glad that it was Sasuke.” A small grin twitched on the corner of his lips.

Sakura let out a small relieved laugh. “I was so worried that you would object-“

Naruto held up a hand. “Listen, we can discuss this later, but right now, you’re due to visit your boyfriend in less than ten minutes.”

Sasuke glared at the doorway to his cell as he listened to the two ninjas who had been assigned to be his keeper till his transfer to his deathbed the next day.

“Such a waste of youth...”

A non-committal grunt sounded at that from the other guard.

“Do you not agree with me Neji-san?”

The Huuga sent a small glare to Lee, indicating that he was not up to talking about their prisoner, instead he changed his leaning position against the wall to pacing the room, which meant that he walked past Sasuke’s cell door with each trip.

A knock on the outside room’s door interrupted Lee’s continued talks. Sasuke’s ears heard hushed whispers before the lock on his cell door was pulled back and opened to reveal the one person he had been wanting to see since his sentencing several weeks beforehand.

As soon as the door had closed and locked behind her, Sakura launched herself into Sasuke’s arms, almost knocking him over in the process. Without a pause, they were passionately kissing, with each kiss treated as being a possibility of being their last.

Pausing to take a breath, Sakura buried her face into Sasuke’s shirt, fighting back the return of tears as she burned into her memory the certain aspects of her lover that would stay with her forever, such as his recognisable scent, and the way his hands ran themselves up and down her back in some form of comfort.

“Sakura...”

His voice broke Sakura away from her thoughts and made her look up to focus her attention to his face.

Sasuke, inwardly, was struggling with what to say to the girl who had risked everything, including the possibility of also being labelled a traitor like himself, to be by his side.

He took a breath. “Thank you.” It was all that he could say, and it meant so much more.

Sakura bit her lip and struggled to hold back her anguish. Sasuke noticed this and did the only thing that came to mind and gently placed his lips upon hers once more in a gentle kiss, much softer than their previous lip movements, and more meaningful.

When they pulled away the second time around, it was not to draw breath, but it was due to Sakura pulling away. “Sasuke-kun, I have something to tell you-“

She was interrupted by the cell door opening and Neji looking in with a grim expression. “Time’s up, I’m sorry. Council’s orders.” He stood there holding the door open as the couple in the cell pulled reluctantly apart.

As she walked out the door, Sakura gave Sasuke one last meaningful look before Neji closed the door and blocked her vision. Lee patted her shoulder and gave her a sympathetic look. “It’ll be alright Sakura-san.” His words were little comfort to the kunoichi, but she appreciated the thought all the same.

“By order of the Council of Konoha, you have been sentenced to death by lethal chakra depletion. We have provided sympathy by ensuring that all methods of painlessness would be ensured throughout the procedure, so be grateful for this small act of thanks for all that you had done for the village...”

The Council member turned a page on his speech notes and continued his assigned task of informing the criminal and the people present why they were standing in a small hospital room and around a bed where the criminal was strapped into.

Sakura had been assigned, by order of the Council, to assist her former sensei Tsunade in the procedure, and was standing with her back to the Council member, facing the young man who looked calm despite having his arms and legs strapped into chakra-controlling chains.

Just when she had snuck her hand into the chains and took Sasuke’s hand into her own, the Council member had finished his speech and it was time to begin the procedure.

Letting go of Sasuke’s hand reluctantly, Sakura glumly prepared a series of needles full of the numbing serum, handing one to Tsunade and took one for herself. At Tsunade’s nod, they started to administer the serum into certain points of Sasuke’s body.

As the numbness slowly took over his body, rendering him weak, helpless, and unable to speak, Sasuke used the last of his energy to whisper, “Goodbye, Sakura”, before passing out, never to see the world again, only eternal blackness.

It was late afternoon, and the sun was just starting the set on the horizon, turning the world golden. A pink-haired woman towing a little boy by the hand walked along rows of gravestones, searching for the one in particular that she had wanted to show to her son since his birth.

Now the boy was three, and old enough to understand, and this showed through his dark green eyes as his black hair blew into his face as he followed his mother.

“This is the one.” Sakura stopped in front of a black marbled gravestone and knelt in front of it to trace the characters that spelt the name of her son’s father. “Kai, your father rests here.”

Kai stepped forward to mimic his mother’s movements of tracing his father’s name on the gravestone. “Mama, what was he like?”

Sakura’s face relaxed into a small smile as she reminisced. “He was always talented, so talented in fact that they called him a Prodigy. He fought for what he believed in, and he never gave up.” A tightness in her chest forced her to pause. “I loved him very much.”

Kai noticed that his mother had started to cry, and crawled into her lap for a hug. Sakura clutched her last connection to the man she loved, and not for the first time regretted not being able to tell Sasuke that she was pregnant during his last days alive. But that was years ago, and what happened in the past, stays in the past.

But the one thing that would not stay in the past was Sakura’s love for the last remaining Uchiha; the man who had once called her ‘annoying’ when they were young; the man she had fought hard to convince that life wasn’t all about revenge, but love and friendship. She was glad to had at least a part in his reborn happiness, an emotion that had been long-forgotten.

Loved ones may go, but as long as there is someone who remembers and still loves them, they will continue to live on.

Well, I do agree that Sakura in this fic isn't the Sakura that we all know and love, but I was trying a new angle, and plus I haven't been keeping up with the anime or manga for a while... Ah well, that's life I guess!

I just wanted to experiment with my writing with this pairing, and thought about writing something sad. It has a little romance in it, but I can definately see that it can be seen as not being SasuSaku, depending on whichever way you want to interpret it really.

Thank you for reading and commenting though!
