Yeah, they only look a little different. xD
I have the first book around here somewhere. I never read it though. Maybe I should add it to my list.

Just a LITTLE. lol
Yeah! There's a lot more to the story than the movie lets on.

Nice!
I read all of the original L. Frank Baum books as a kid, and I loved them at the time, though as an adult, they may seem kinda disjointed. *cough*Ozma is the best character that was introduced in them apart from Dorothy and Toto.*cough* And the illustrations in those books are GORGEOUS. If nothing else, you should check them out for the artwork. Very art Nouveau.

"Disjointed"?
From what I heard, Ozma sounds pretty cool.
Nouveau! I wonder if the ebook set I got has the illustrations in it... Probably not...
Is Marshal Mallow in the books anywhere? or was that strictly a Legends of Oz thing?

Well, I meant that they are very episodic and don't necessarily hold together from a "let's analyze the plot" perspective. If you look at each individual chapter as a standalone adventure, maybe it would make more sense for some of the books. A few have a more defined story, but I don't remember which ones. Don't get me wrong, they're still great fun. The only one I own is "the Road to Oz" and in the edition I have (a replica of the original 1909 edition), it has colored pages, I mean, the paper is actually different colors!
Yeah, Dorothy is my favorite (+Toto, who actually is much more than meets the eye!), quickly followed by Ozma.
Some of the art is online, by John Neill (www.google.com/search?q=john+r… ) But there are HUNDREDS of other illustrations. In the book I own alone, there are 126 illustrations.
I have no memory of any character exactly like that (of course, I could have forgotten!). However, there are plenty of OTHER interesting fellows and ladies in the stories (Tik-Tok, Polychrome, the Patchwork Girl, Jack Pumpkinhead, etc) And the China Country people are actually in the Wizard of Oz book, so at least some of that film was taken from the books.

I eventually wanna get the actual paper books... but for now I can't afford it.
Oooo... it does sound pretty!
I'll have to read the books so I can get a better idea of who my favs are. I always liked Scarecrow, though.
Sweet!
Oh! I saw Jack Pumpkinhead in that other movie. Was it "Return to Oz"?

I like the movie too. Don't get why people hated on it when it first came out. I also have some knowledge of the bookverse. Here's a few spoilers:
1. The tinman used to a human who fell in love with a girl who served a rich woman. She paid the Wicked Witch of the East to get rid of him by enchanting his ax so that when he used it, it would swin back and cut off a limb. A tinsmith replaced it for him but it kept happened until his whole body needed to be replaced.
2. There are five witches, formerly six: Glinda, the Good witch of the south, Locasta, good witch of the north who first meets Dorothy and gives her the silver shoes, the Wicked Witches of the East and West, and Mombi, the dethroned and in hiding Wicked Witch of the North. The wicked Witch of the South was beaten by Glinda a long time ago.
3. The Wizard sees Dorothy and her friends one at a time over the course of several days and assumes many different disguises to do so.
4. The wicked witch of the west only has one eye.
5. The Flying Monkeys aren't evil and don't serve anyone person. They were cursed to obey the wearer of an enchanted golden cap, performing three commands each for the wearer. The wicked witch of the west got the cap and and used them to first take over the West, then battle the Wizard when he attempted to overthrow her, and finally, nab Dorothy and her buddies.
6. Dorothy is noticeably tougher in the books. She intentionally splashes the witch with water in a fit of rage instead of it being an accident.

1. No clue about the flower thing but in the books I heard of, his love found someone else who also ended up becoming tin and through a bizarre series of events, married a weird creature made out of both his and the Tin Man's old human parts.
2. Even L. Frank Braum didn't know what to do with her. Glinda is the go-to good witch in all other Oz books and very few adaptions acknowledge Locasta.
3. Dorothy saw a floating head, tinman saw a monster, and Cowardly Lion saw a ball of fire.
4. Yeah, it was pretty aweome what Dorothy did. Killing the witch was still accidental but it's still worth noting.
5. Yeah, Dorothy is ten at most I think. Judy garland only won the role based on how she played innocent and naive. Shirley Temple {famous child star from way back} tried out and was even an Oz fan but stuff happened.
6. Then of course, there's the backstory of how the Wizard overthrew Oz's previous king and hid his daughter away to prevent her from inheriting the throne. You ever hear of Ozma?

1. ... that sounds so disturbing. XD
2. Ahhh.
3. K
4. It was, like, a happy accident? XD
5. Dont' get me wrong, I like Judy Garland and I think she did a good job... but it is very strange to watch a teenager play Dorothy after learning that she's supposed to be 10.
6. Yeah, I've heard of Ozma. The Wizard is a pretty shifty character isn't he? Unless that previous king guy wasn't really a good king...

Funny thing is, people liked the Wizard and hated the Ozma backstory so L.Frank Braum retconned it out of future Oz novels.

In a later book that talked about Ozma's backstory, he simply changed some things so the Wizard wasn't included in her kidnapping.
