Because in PDF the picture does not lose quality when you change the size, and in PNG or GIF format, yes.
You have a longer version in PNG if you do not like the PDF format:

Very nice work, I looked at the vactors and they look pretty good. I'm surprised you used Gimp and not Inkscape for making this work though...

Also, I am not familiarizated with Inkscape.
I prefer GIMP/Photoshop and Paint.

Of course, what ever tools you find most comfortable. I like inkscape for vectors, you might like Gimp, but most people like svg.

Yes.
I prefer Photoshop, but actually I am working on Ubuntu, and I can not use it without other programs, plugins...
So I use GIMP. Is fastest.
I also use Vector Magic, but you have to do several corrections to make a nice job.
Time ago, I used SVG, but it did not like me.
