Taken at the Shinto shrine attached to Kumamoto Castle in spring 2006.

During the almost three years I spent in Japan I took hundreds of pictures. This is one of my all time favorites. Like most of my favorites, it was something of an accident. I just wanted a shot of the torii (shrine gate). I snapped it quickly and then continued on about my business.

It wasn't until later when I was able to look at it in a larger size that something about it really resonated with me. I guess it's just a really "Japan" kind of moment that I was able to capture.
