Chapter 1
Change of Plan

Autumn ran as fast as his legs would carry him towards the smouldering wreck of his home.

"Mum!?... Dad!?" he shouted.

He sweeps his gaze across the still hot embers of burnt timber and smouldering ashes, looking for any sign of life. He felt something twist inside him when he noticed a bloody lump buried under a pile of burning timbers.

"DAD!!" he screamed running over to the buried lump.

He grunted with effort as he tried to move the timbers, pushing, kicking, head-butting to no avail. Tears stung at his eyes, blurring his vision and still he struggled in vain, desperation outweighing reason.

“DAD, DAD, DAAAD!!” he yelled repeatedly.

Then like a knife through his conscious, he suddenly became aware of a whimpering sound behind him. Vision still blurred and pain stabbing at him from the small cuts and burns now littering his body after trying to move the timbers, he turned to face the noise.
Blinking away tears to clear his vision, he yelped. His mother was being held at the point of a sword by someone clad in black armour.

“Please… DON’T!” he pleaded.

Time slowed. He watched on in terrified horror as the black armoured figure drove the sword through his mother. Watched as blood was drawn, her eyes full of tears fixed on him as she gurgled her last words.

“R-…Run!” she said before going limp.

He screamed in rage through his twisted, sorrowful heart and tear filled eyes as he charged towards the figure. The world around him began to fade to black as his vision wavered and swam.

Autumn Night bolted upright drenched in a cold sweat, hoof held out towards the opposite end of his room. He felt a few tears still dripping down his muzzle across the tear streaked rivers they’d already made over his scaled coat. He forced his breathing to settle and wiped his face on the bed sheets just in time to hear a knock on his door, one of the guards.

“Sir?... Is everything alright?” a young mare wearing steel armour entered the room as the door creaked open.
"Yes, everything's fine… Please let Pearl Quiver know that there's something I must discuss with her later today” he replied
“At once Sir!” the mare exclaimed, saluting before leaving the room.

Autumn let out a sigh taking the moment of solace to gather his thoughts as he stared down at the damp sheet in his hooves. After collecting his thoughts and making sure that he wasn’t crying anymore, he pulled himself from his bed heading for the adjoined bathroom.
Turning on the tap he splashed his face with water, sighing gratefully as he felt the dried tears wash away...
