She sat on the piano bench, holding a large binder close to her chest.
She’d never performed for so many people before.
Not to mention that everyone in the room’s careers rides on her getting this right.
She’d been hired by their professor to play the accompaniment for the upcoming musical from their performing arts college. The school was known around the world to produce the best and brightest of the acting, musical, and dramatic world. People from everywhere begged to go to this school so only the best of the best got into the LA-based school.
The class she’d been asked to work with was consistent of only 10 people since they were the school’s top male performers.
She’d been told that talent agents and Broadway scouters would be in the crowd watching them closely on everything. These men’s entire careers were staked on this performance and she was terrified of messing this up for them.
She felt sick just thinking about it.
“Is that girl ok?” A tall blonde asked from the back of the room. His baby blue eyes were trained on her jean-clad leg that had been bouncing erratically since she got in the room.
“I have no clue…,” A shorter black haired man said, adjusting his flannel shirt. He was never good with people being awkward around him. He always felt that it was his fault.
“Do you think she’s the accompanist?”
“Maybe.”
They watched a green-haired person walk into the room and dragged him over to their spot in the back.
“What the hell was that for?” He complained but was quickly shushed by the black haired man.
He discreetly pointed at the girl who had stopped looking at them.
“Do you know who that is?”
The green haired man looked and shook his head, “No. Why?”
“She’s been here since we walked in. This is a men’s class so she’s not a student as far as we know,” The blond said.
“Huh… maybe she’s-” The greenette was cut off by their professor walking into the room.
The woman got up as soon as she saw him and rushed over. Her smile was soft and she introduced herself in a hushed voice to where the boys couldn’t hear her name.
The professor nodded and smiled at her before leading her back over to the piano. He had her sit back down and he began class.
Everyone in the room was on edge by their unannounced guest. The teacher took quick notice of their unease and side glances to the poor woman at the piano.
“Okay, class! It’s time to introduce the elephant in the room,” He finally announces and motions towards the woman.
“This is (Y/N) (L/N). She’s going to be helping you all out by being your accompanist. She can play piano, guitar, and violin, so she should be very helpful. Do you want to say something about yourself, Dear?”
The girl flinched at the acknowledgment before standing up clumsily. Her foot hit the bench on accident in her haste and she cringed in pain, dropping her large binder.
Papers, sheet music, and notes scattered across the room, making (Y/N) panic. She’d just embarrassed herself in front of the entire class of strangers.
“I-I’m so sorry…,” She apologized in a small voice and tried to gather her papers. Her nose began to burn red along with her eyes, proving that she was close to tears.
The three boys that had gossiped earlier got up from their seat in the back row and rushed up to the front of the room, helping her gather her papers since hey had gone so far.
“Here,” The blonde smiled at her and handed her his stack of papers, “It’s nice to meet you. I’m Felix.”
The Raven haired man was next to hand her a stack of papers, “I’m Mark. If I could take a guess, these are yours.”
(Y/N) blushed a little at his joke, smiling and accepting the stack from his hands.
“I’m Sean, but I go by Jack. Sorry, we made you so nervous. We just don’t have a lot of new people in the room,” The greenette introduced himself and explained the class’ behavior.
“It’s ok…,” She responded and soon enough she had all of her papers. She put them back into her binder and stood up with someone else’s help. Another man had gotten out of his seat. Another black haired man had gotten out of his seat to help out. He was shorter than Mark and was the only person in the room with piercings.
She didn’t want to be rude so she let him take her hand and help her up.
“I’m Nathan, but Nate’s ok if you want. We’re not trying to scare you, Miss,” He told her and smiled.
“N-No it’s ok…,” She shook her head and looked at her feet.
“Ahem,” A voice sounded, making the men all turn to their professor, “If you all are quite finished, then I’d like to have Miss (L/N) show you what she’s made of. She was hand picked by our music department for a reason. Felix, Mark, Sean, center stage please.”
The men nodded, Nate quickly escaping to his seat next to a dorkier looking man with a backpack that had ‘RE’ engraved on it.
“Miss (L/N), I’m going to have them perform “Sincerely Me” if you don’t mind playing that on the piano,” He said and (Y/N) nodded. She dug through her papers and pulled a few papers from her binder, placing them in front of her on the piano to look at them.
She positioned her fingers over the ivory keys and waited for her cue.
“Ok Miss (L/N), three, two, one. Go!”
(Y/N) started to play, her body bouncing softly to the beat as her fingers moved across the keys. She had the notes and the tempo perfect, not missing a single beat.
The men on stage all looked impressed and they smiled, quickly snapping into their characters and beginning to sing.
Jack started off, taking the role of Connor Murphy. “Dear Evan Hansen, we’ve been way too out of touch. Things have been crazy and it sucks that we don't talk that much but I should tell you that I think of you each night. I rub my nipples and start moaning with delight.”
(Y/N) almost burst out laughing but focused on stopping her playing so that the boys could act out their lines.
“Why would you write that?” Mark assumed the role of Evan Hansen.
“I'm just trying to tell the truth.” Felix laughed his line out as he took over Jared’s role.
“This needs to be perfect. These emails have to prove that we were actually friends. Just… I'll do it.” Mark spoke, pretending to take something from Felix. Jack began to sing again, (Y/N) picking up on the piano again.
“I've gotta tell you, life without you has been hard-” Jack sung again but got cut off by Felix.
“Hard?” Felix questioned.
“Has been bad-” Jack tried again.
“Bad?”
“Has been rough.” Jack finally finished with a slight annoyance in his voice.
“Kinky!” Felix smiled.
“And I miss talking about life and other stuff.”
“Very specific.” Felix said accusingly.
“Shut up!” Mark groaned.
“I like my parents-” Jack sang again, being cut off again by Felix.
“Who says that?”
“I love my parents, but each day's another fight. If I stop smoking drugs, then everything might be alright.” Jack shrugged.
“Smoking drugs?” Felix questioned and Mark pushed an invisible laptop into Felix’s hands.
“Just fix it!” He demands.
“If I stop smoking crack-” Jack started up again in a slightly different and grittier voice, (Y/N) trying everything to keep herself from bursting out laughing as she played the piano. She was amazing and the guys could feel her energy and joy in her notes.
“Crack?!” Mark gasped out his line.
“If I stop smoking pot, then everything might be alright. I'll take your advice. I'll try to be more nice. I'll turn it around. Wait and see! 'Cause all that it takes is a little reinvention! It's easy to change if you give it your attention! All you gotta do is just believe you can be who you want to be. Sincerely, Me!” Jack’s voice rung through the classroom and the other students began to clap along, (Y/N) playing happily from her spot as she let her fingers dance over the keys.
“Are we done yet?” Felix asked.
“Well I can't just give them one email. I want to show that I was, like, a good friend, you know?” Mark said nervously.
“Oh my god.” Felix laughed and rolled his eyes.
“Dear Connor Murphy, Yes, I also miss our talks. Stop doing drugs. Just try to take deep breaths and go on walks.” Mark started to sing now, a melodic voice entering the room, meddling together with the piano.
“No.” Felix shook his head.
“I'm sending pictures of the most amazing trees-” Mark tried to sing again.
“No!”
“You'll be obsessed with all my forest expertise-”
“Absolutely not.”
“Dude, I'm proud of you. Just keep pushing through. You're turning around. I can see.” Mark got a sentence out finally and (Y/N) smiled, bouncing to the claps and tune of the song.
“Just wait and see!” Jack joined in, allowing him and Mark to sing together.
“'Cause all that it takes is a little reinvention! It's easy to change if you give it your attention! All you gotta do is just believe you can be who you want to be. Sincerely, Me!” The belted out together, sounding great before Jack had to ruin the moment.
“My sister's hot!” He sang jokingly, Mark turning to Felix and gaping.
“What the hell!” He shouts.
“My bad.” Felix shrugged it off, winking at him.
“Dear Evan Hansen, Thanks for every note you send.” Jack sang first, followed by Mark.
“Dear Connor Murphy, I'm just glad to be your friend.”
“Our friendship goes beyond your average kind of bond-” They both sung before Mark sung the next line.
“But not because we're gay!”
“No, not because we're gay!” Jack joined in again.
“We're close, but not that way! The only man that I love is my dad!”
“Well anyway!” Jack took the lead for a moment before he switched off with Mark again.
“You're getting better every day!”
“I'm getting better every day!”
“We're getting better every day!” They sang together before adding Felix in to finish off the song. (Y/N) stood up from the bench as she played, her energy and love of the piece clearly showing as she played the notes perfectly.
“Hey hey hey hey! 'Cause all that it takes is a little reinvention! It's easy to change if you give it your attention! All you gotta do is just believe you can be who you want to be. Sincerely-” They all sung together, Felix’s voice suddenly dropping out so that it was just Mark and Jack for one last line together.
“Miss you dearly!”
Felix sprung back in and they all sang their next line with wide smiles.
“Sincerely, Me!”
“Sincerely, Me!” Mark sung one more line alone before Felix and Jack sung together on the next one.
“Sincerely, Me!”
“Sincerely, Me!” They all belt out together and (Y/N) finished playing, throwing her hands up and taking a step back from the piano. She’d been so in the zone that she’d forgotten that the class was in the room.
When she came down from her musical high, she looked out at the class and noticed everyone staring at her. She quickly put up her walls again, looking down and wrapping her arms around her middle. She pointed her gaze at her shoes, not daring to look up at the class.
They were all silent, flabbergasted by how amazing her piano skills were and the clear love of being able to play it.
Eventually, claps began to emerge until the entire room was filled with cheers. The class began to rush up to her and crowd the woman.
“That was great!”
“Where did you learn to play like that?”
“She was definitely a good catch!”
(Y/N) wasn’t used to being the center of attention, having never liked it all that much. She would much rather be in the back supporting people up on stage by playing the music.
“U-Uh- I… I uh…” She attempted to speak but was getting overwhelmed.
The man from earlier with the engraved backpack walked up to her and began to push people back to give the poor thing some space.
“Hey now! Come on! Can’t you guys see she’s scared?” He complains and managed to get them to back off a few feet from her. He turned to look at her and held a hand out for her to shake.
“I’m AJ. I’ll speak on behalf of the class. That was amazing and we’re all very glad to have you as our accompanist,” He spoke in a cheerful tone, smiling politely.
(Y/N) took his hand and nodded, “I-I’m (Y/N). It’s nice to meet you all. I’m very glad to be working with you all.”
She felt so happy to finally introduce herself properly, internally squealing in delight.
The men all looked at her and grinned, all collectively having thoughts about how sweet her voice was and wondering if she could sing.
The professor decided to jump in now, clapping,” Alright, everyone back to your seats. We shouldn’t overwhelm the poor woman on her first day. She might not come back if you do.”
The men all backed off to their seats, the three singers from the stage joining their class so that they wouldn’t get in trouble.
“Miss (L/N) is only going to be here until the end of the musical. She was called in from New York.”
“New York… wait does she work with people on Broadway?!” A voice in the class asked.
“Not exactly… I’m a top student at The New York City Performing Arts Academy,” She answered, “We train our students to be on Broadway since it’s just down the seat.”
“Whoa….” A few people praised.
“I took a semester off to help out here. Since I’m technically volunteering, this is counting towards my degree.”
“Wait, you’re not getting paid?” Nate spoke up.
“No… I’m here willingly by choice.”
“Do you even have a place to stay?” AJ asked with concern.
“Well… not exactly…”
“Not exactly?”
“I-I was planning to find a place today. I’m at a hotel right now…”
A hand slammed on a desk and a tall afroed man stood up, “We can’t let a lady struggle to find her way around our city!”
“Well, what’s your idea then, Dan?” Nate asked him.
Dan thought for a moment before smiling, “Isn’t that top floor dorm still unoccupied?”
The men all went quiet.
“That’s a great idea! If she’s gonna be working with us then she should get to know us in and outside of class!” Jack shouts from the back of the classroom, standing up excitedly.
“What are you talking about…,” (Y/N) asked quietly.
“Everyone in our class lives in the same apartment building. Well, technically they’re dorms. There are apartments that the school is partnered with. Our build houses just our class. There’s one room on the top floor that has been unoccupied for over a year,” AJ explains, “They’re basically asking if you’d be willing to live with us and use that empty room.”
“The building manager said that boys and girls can both live there but we’re an all boy class so we’ve never had to worry about that.” Felix spoke up.
“What do you say? You’re going to be dealing with us for the next few months anyway,” Mark asked, the rest of the class on the edge of their seats.
(Y/N) looked at the floor and thought about it.
She did need a place to live and she knew that it was best to get to know all the guys the best she could so that she could work with them even better than she would just being in their class.
“... Alright… I’ll take you up on your kindness…,” She smiled at the class.
This was going to be an interesting few months.
