In retrospect, perhaps Blanco should have warned the boy that prey did not, in fact, simply roll over and allow itself to become dinner just because you caught it. Apparently, that was not common sense, and sometimes it took a fish slapping you in the face to learn it. The the poor hatchling had been at it for hours, though, and it was the closest he had gotten to success - and the way he stared down at the creek with that fallen expression was pitiful enough that it was simply easier to congratulate him, call it a day, and let him trot back to the nest with his head held high.
