Description I did this as a Tribute to one of the artists that inspires me to create new work and to not limit myself with my art. As having a background in realism, it's sometimes hard to let myself free to pursue other styles of are such as impressionism or even abstract.

Van Gogh's work helps me to aspire to reach beyond my limits to go places with my art that I never thought I would.

Therefore I give you Homage to Vincent.

Enjoy.

The spiky spooky dark foliage is great too.

thanks. I've never painted this type of sunflower before.

It looks like a batch of giant yellow chrysanthemums instead of sunflowers. Their centers are folded in and that's something characteristic of mums. Any type of sunflower opens completely and exposes the seed bed in the center. But some mums grow gigantic the way sunflowers do. "Football mums" are the size of basketballs sometimes, so maybe these are just huge mums!

Perhaps, all I know is that these are a varity that Vincent had mingling in with regular type sunflowers Here's a link to his painting > [link]

and a link to the sort of sunflowers they are > [link]

Another > [link]

I think they are a subspecies and do open up to reveal their seeds but have much more in the way of petals.

Here's a good one ... They call them Teddy Bear sunflowers > [link] rev=/images%3Fq%3Dfluffy%2Bsunflowers%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D

Oh wow! That is so great! I'd never heard of them -- and I think when I first saw that Van Gogh that I assumed he'd gathered other flowers the same color, not that they were two subspecies of the same one!

Thank you! That is so great -- and now I'll remember this. Your painting is so perfect too, you really captured their rounded texture and did their complexity loosely.

So this is it! I'm impressed! Your style does still show, the yellow flowers are a little more detailed and maybe more carefully rendered than Vincent would've done them -- or maybe not, because in full view the lines are loose and strong, there are just a lot of them. The little bit of starry swirled darkness in the corner is magnificent too, and the composition is as overpowering as some of Van Gogh's work. I think you're doing great with impressionism and that you've carried on what Vincent Van Gogh began in a fantastic way! Well titled.

Yeah My flowers are more detailed, but they had to be otherwise People wouldn't know what they were. If I had painted them zoomed out more then I could have gotten away with making it more impressionistic. In the manner I've done it ... I painted them closer to my regular style while doing the smidgeon of sky in his loose starry night style. Paying homage to him in my own special way.

Hopefully I'll be able to pruduce even looser works in the future ... I think this summer painting plein air will help me acomplish that.

And the wild spooky green leaves floated somewhere in between -- something like your other art but with a lot of Vincent too. The whole piece is so powerful.

Outstanding job, John. The colors are amazing. You captured the level of detail in a sunflower wonderfully in this piece. I really like the idea of paying homage to the artists you have drawn inspiration from. Hmm, how can I do that in glass...

Thanks Justin.

As for paying homage in glass ... you'd have to tell me which artist's influenced you and then figure things out from there.

Well, I've certainly been influenced by Van Gogh, as well as Monet, Escher, and Dali, to name a few. Translating a painting into a work in glass is an inexact science at the best of times, I think. The few paintings that I've looked at trying to do glass versions of would have ended up as abstracts, and I'm afraid that that may be a charitable view of it. I'd love to do "Starry Night" in glass, but in order to get anything approaching the level of detail in the painting, I'd either have to make it absolutely enormous or paint the glass with glass stainers' colors and fuse it. Neither really would work for me, unfortunately.

I hear you Justin.

There's a store about 20 minutes away that specializes in stained glass supplies, and I can imagine from seeing how things are done at how big the peice would need to be, but just imagine at how frigging amazing the light would look coming through a starry night rendition done as a huge stained glass window.

If I ever get rich I'll commission you to make me one.

A wonderful painting you have done here. The detail work is outstanding and you have wisely used a foil of blue/grey so that we are not overwhelmed with all the yellow. And the color itself is interesting, not too bold nor washed out. Great job!

Thank you Marsha.

That was a very observant comment. I used the blue to show a bit of night sky and a hint of van goghish stars, and yes it does help break up the monotonity of all the yellow in the painting.

Thank you Kim.

Your the first to have noticed the resemblance to it, and yes it's definately what I was trying to immitate. I was thinking at first of titling it Vincent's suns looking down on a stary night ... but thought that just stating that it was a Homage ti Vincent would be more suitable.

You're so wonderful for noticing.

You may be stretching your limits, but you haven't gone beyond your ability to amaze! Clearly evocative of Vincent... and clearly your own style.

It has stopped being a question of if I can afford your works... but when.
