Piccolo feels useless as he is weaker than all the saiyans and begins to simply hide in a cave for weeks. Gohan comes over and says that Piccolo's power has increased and that he wants to fight him. Piccolo snaps because he thinks Gohan is making fun of his power and slashes Gohan. To his surprise, it actually hurts Gohan. Piccolo gets back into the swing of things and spars evenly with Gohan. Gohan was holding back the entire time, but didn't tell Piccolo so Piccolo wouldn't feel useless

Gohan goes through depression after Goku's death. Chi-chi can't make him snap out of it, and she's too worried stressing over her pregnancy. So while lounging on his bed, doing nothing, a green arm smashes through the window, snatches Gohan by the hair and tosses him outside.
The surprised Gohan is jerked out his reverie and is shocked to see Piccolo attacking - animals! Innocent creatures, scurrying as he blasts and destroys everything, a mad glint in his eyes D=
He aims a death beam at Chi-Chi's home, and Gohan snaps.
He fights Piccolo as an ssj. Piccolo's strength and intelligence to understand how Gohan fights, and the young Saiyan's anger clouding his skills, makes them fairy even. Then Piccolo beats him down, and Gohan gives up. Disgusted, Piccolo explains to him that whining doesn't solve a thing.
If he wanted to make Goku's sacrifice worthless, then go back to bed. Or get up, dust yourself off, and move on. Because there may come a time an opponent won't just stop just because Gohan gives up.
With that Piccolo flies off. The next day Gohan visits Piccolo, who is tending the forest he destroyed, and explains humbly that he understands, and even found a job in a construction site to help pay the bills for his mom. Piccolo doesn't answer, but the tension between them fades. He even allows Gohan to help tend to the wild animals.

In my fanfic called DBX,let's say Piccolo was controlled by Ozotto and Gohan must prove himself worthy of protecting the earth without the help of his dad.

Lets see... Gohan is SS1, but he looks like post cell arc. This would be... ... yep. I bet you anything piccolo attacked Gohan after school one day because he was "going soft", and gohan went ss1 to fight him. Needless to say, they were and are evenly matched (cell outclasses ss1 in imperfect form, and piccolo fought an imperfect cell to the point he retreated). Gohan has a high base power level, so his power boost would definitely bring him above that.
