It is the seventh largest country in the world, behind Australia and slightly larger than India, is the second largest country situated entirely in Asia, after China, and the second largest monarchy, after Canada. It is the largest Muslim state.
Though Arabic is the official language, English, French, and Portuguese are widely spoken, along with numerous South Asian languages.
It is the world's only federal elective absolute monarchy. Its system of government is similar to Malaysia, but without the constitutional limitations on the King's power.
There have been four heads of state since the country's independence: 2 from the Hashemite dynasty (both Kings of Hegaz), 1 from the Saud dynasty (the King of Palestine), and 1 from the Mutawakkilite dynasty (the King of Yemen).
The Council of Monarchs is an assembly of all the heads of the various constituents of the UAK, and acts as an informal advisory body to the King. Its chair has only ever been held by a member of the Saud family, and usually by the King of Palestine.
There is an intense internal power-struggle between several of the major ruling families in the UAK, including the Hashemites, Sauds, Mutawakkilites, Aulaqis, and al-Thanis.
It has the world's largest reserves of oil and natural gas, almost as much as the rest of the world combined. Owing to this, it is considered to be one of the most powerful states on Earth.
