Description This is the second part of my exploration into how an Austrian-United Germany might look, showing Germany in the modern era (the first map, showing Germany in the Age of Imperialism is HERE ). This map also shows members of the German Speaking Community (Deutschspachige Gemeinshaft), a loose cooperation of former German colonies akin to the Commonwealth in OTL.

I also made a coat of armsflag , a set of flags , and a Wikipedia-style country info-box  to go along with this map.

TIMELINE (for the history of the formation of this Germany, see the first map )

1922 - Iberia, France, Italy, and Russia, the last remaining members of the Latin Entente, surrender to German forces following the joint Anglo-German occupation of both Madrid and Paris, the Germano-Turkish occupation of Rome, and the Germano-Scandinavian occupation of Moscow.
1930 - The Great Mediation sees many of the former Kleinstaaterei amalgamated into the 23 constituent parts of Germany we see today. These actions, announced by Emperor Otto, proves a source of great contention in the Empire, with many of Austria's competitors (namely Prussia, Denmark, and Bavaria) seeing it as an act of totalitarianism by the Emperor. A brief civil war ensues as Prussia, Denmark, and several of the Dutch provinces seek to secure their independence from Habsburg dominion. With aid from Poland, France, and Britain, the loyalist forces are successful in putting down the rebellion, and Otto transfers the city of Krakow and the Prussian province of Neuburg to Poland and France respectively in recognition of their efforts, both having held long-standing desires for those areas. As a compromise, wide-reaching autonomy is granted to the provinces of the Netherlands, by which they effectively form a separate entity within the German Empire.
1935 - The South African Union is granted independence.
1948 - Ceylon is granted independence.
1949 - The German East Indies are granted independence as Indonesia.
1957 - The German Gold Coast is granted independence as Ghana.
1960 - German Congo is granted independence as The Union of The Congo, Ghana becomes a republic. The German Speaking Community is founded.
1961 - German East Africa is granted independence as Tanganyika and Zanzibar.
1968 - The Maskarenes are granted independence.
1972 - Ceylon becomes a republic.
1975 - Guyana is granted independence, becomes a republic.
1976 - Greenland becomes a constituent part of the Empire, the present constitution comes into force.
1977 - Tanganyika and Zanzibar becomes a republic.
1992 - The Maskarenes become a republic.
1997 - Tsangdong and Formosa transferred to China.
2005 - German West Indies and German Pacific Territories become constituent parts of the Empire.
2011 - Emperor Otto dies and his son, Charles, becomes Emperor.

Today, the current German Emperor, Charles II, remains Emperor of Germany, Emperor of Austria, Emperor of Indonesia, King of South Africa, and King of The Kongo, among other titles.

I think the German is pretty good, but it's only my second language so I've probably slipped up somewhere, so please let me know if you have any suggestions on that! I am also aware that some of the place names are a little inaccurate: whilst I have tried to use the appropriate German exonyms where I could find them, some places were lacking German names, and some simply weren't German enough (mainly in the global south). So I tried my best to fabricate some authentically German sounding place names.

DISCLAIMER: This in no way represents my views on Germany, Austria, or any other country featured (real or fictitious), German irredentism, Germans in general, or irredentism as a whole. I take it core China is a republic while Manchuria is under some sort of truncated Qing Dynasty?

Some of the germanized place names in member nations sound pretty weird, but this is great otherwise! Also some grammatical errors, genderwise, in nation names, but otherwise good!

Hell, that's one of the most fascinating alternate history I ever read, good job, mate!
I hope you will cover more of the story in this timelime, like the Kolombische Eidgenossenschaft.

Once again, good job!
EDIT: I just figured it out that it was your previous project of "A more perfect union", silly me.

That's so kind of you to say, thank you so much!
The Kolombische Eidgenossenschaft/Columbian Confederation is actually different to the USA of A More Perfect Union in that it's still under British Rule (aka, the US lost the civil war). It's something I might look at in future, but I just like throwing in little hints about the situation of the wider world in my maps, and that's one of them haha

I'd be interested to see what you would do with a map involving Prussia unifying Germany instead, because this was excellent!

That's an interesting alternate history, even if I would've put Romance/Walloon Flander (Lille, Douai) inside Wallonia instead of Flanders, this area was often considered as a distinct/seperate province in the Habsbourg's Low Countries, and have a lot of cultural links with Tournaisis and Artois
And Lille/Rijsel could be a great capitale for this Western Wallonia ^^

Due to the autonomy of the provinces of Netherlands, I guess each one have their own regional language ? (Dutch, French, Flemish, Picard, Walloon & Luxemburgish)

HouseOfHesse In reply to Scipia [2015-07-27 16:12:04 +0000 UTC]

Well I've learned something there! I based the borders of the component parts of the Netherlands on the various duchies/counties/lordships of the region, and Wallonia came about from a merger of Artois, Hainaut, and Cambrai, so that's why it looks like that, but had I known that I may well have put that bit of Flanders in there too!
I should imagine that Dutch would be dominant in the region, but there would definitely be recognition for other languages too, and well as Limburgish. The whole country would probably be very decentralised, otherwise there would be all sorts of infighting!

Scipia In reply to HouseOfHesse [2015-07-28 16:28:00 +0000 UTC]

That's a frequent choice, a lot of people don't really know the history of this region, even in French Flanders a lot of people still think that Flanders is only the Flemish speaking area ^^'

Yes, I guess that multi-linguistic countries could only survive with decentralization. That would've been interesting to see how these area would've evolve within this alternate history. I also love your choice for the flag of the Low Country, but I wonder, why did you remove the Austrian eagle from this flag ?

HouseOfHesse In reply to Scipia [2015-07-29 09:04:44 +0000 UTC]

Just for aesthetics really! I imagine there'd probably be two versions, one without the Austrian eagle which is used officially, and one with the eagle which is sometimes used by the general populace (a bit like there is with the OTL German flag). Also I suppose you could argue that removing it would help placate any secessionists in the region somewhat by removing any references to their Austrian rulers? Maybe?

Scipia In reply to HouseOfHesse [2015-07-29 16:42:46 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, yes but secessionnists/autonomists would probably also want to substitute the Austrian eagle, with a Dutch/Belgian lion don't you think ? It's a very important symbol in the Low Countries.

HouseOfHesse In reply to Scipia [2015-07-30 13:03:43 +0000 UTC]

A flag with the Dutch lion on it would probably make an excellent flag for Dutch secessionists! But I would imagine a neutral flag would be preferred by the Austrian administration so as not to provoke anything, if you will, hence why I used a plain flag.

Great work with the maps! And nice to see an Austrian German Empire for a change!

Though it's also interesting how Hungary like in OTL never quite let go of the Habsburgs.

That was my intention! I do find the old 'Germany wins WWII' scenario interesting, but I felt like offering something a little different
I like to think Austria and Hungary would remain friends after splitting up, hence them joining the Great War on Austria's side and being a part of the Deutschspachige Gemeinshaft.

It'd be interesting as well to see what the rest of the world looks like.

If you do the biggest version of the map, the "German speaking union" shows the rest of the world in outline, and he's done maps for parts of it:

This is... really interesting. I'm especially curious about this Poland. Why we have Slovakia?

HouseOfHesse In reply to Darne93 [2015-07-25 11:55:34 +0000 UTC]

Because why not! I was kind of toying with the idea of making a kind of Yugoslavia for the West Slavs (so Zachódslavia?) but seeing as the Czech lands are Austrian, this only really left Poland and Slovakia.

Yay for the Republic of Both Nations! But this time the second nation is a bit different... Anyway, it's nice! It would be probably even nicer with a Habsburg or Hochberg king but we can't have everything, can we?

True! Would that work alright as a word? I see you're Polish so you're probably a better judge of that than me (my Polish is very poor).
It's from Wikipedia, but I couldn't tell you precisely where, I've had it floating around on various hard drives for about 5 years now haha.
