Here's a quick bit of trivia! Did you know that journals comprise about 25% of posts submitted daily?    Journals are an integral part of the deviantART experience, and coming soon, they'll receive the spotlight they deserve.

  Introducing the new Journal portal!
A brand new look is coming to the News page .

  • From the Journal portal, which will be replacing the News page, you'll be able to browse, submit, or search journals and news.  You'll be able to browse by Newest, Popular, and Featured (which is comprised of official deviantART news and highlights).
  • Journals will be visible with their skin, giving you a better context of the post.

(Hover over the screenshot below to see more!)

What happened to the old News page?
As you may recall, we teased the release of merging news, journals, blogs, and deviations in order to create a unified submission process .  This means journals, blogs, and news will receive a load of awesome benefits that only deviations currently have, including:

  • Being able to journals
  • Hiding journals from non-deviants
  • Share settings
  • Storage
  • Blog searching
  • Comment disabling on group blogs
  • Journal :thumb: codes

The aim of this upgrade is to unify all these systems, making them simpler to use and more consistent in appearance and functionality.  As news, journals, and group blogs become one, they will all be found in the News section shown above.  The News page will have an improved look and feel, and provide you an easy way to search and browse through journals, blogs, and news all in one place!

But this looks a lot like the Today page!
Where the new News page and the Today page differ is that Today only shows the most popular journals, whereas the upgraded News page sorts journals by recent, popular, and featured.  Both will still live, but we're taking the best bits and pieces from Today and adding them to the News page.

The future is bright, my friends. Be well.

Can you please change it back to the old system? When I search journals now I get less results.

I actually truly want to pull my hair out about this change right now. HOWEVER, I would ADORE it if you simply added a button on userpages (or even just for premium members, I don't plan on stopping paying anytime soon) that allows you to choose which journal you display on your profile. If this exists, I will feel royally dumb but would love to have it pointed out.
Love, a dA lover.

yay, this really is an awesome change! Being able to search for journals and having results with a preview is extremely helpful

Giving non Premium Members the option to use thumbcodes like it was possible in news, is great. Does the same go for using headlines in journals now? This was a very helpful HTML tag in writing news and it would be awesome for a lot of people, esp. CSS writers, who with that would have the option to give styles to a nice amount of headlines without the necessity to create custom div-tags

I would like to make a suggestion for journals, and I'm not sure where else to put it but here. I have a habit of accidentally closing windows when I'm in the middle of typing a fairly long journal, and I've heard I'm not the only one with this problem. For this reason, I post hardly any journals here, because there is no "save as draft" or "auto-save" option in journals. Instead, I use my blog. I would love to be able to post things in my journals here, but this makes it very inconvenient. I think it would be awesome if we could add one of these features. I know that I would post significantly longer and probably better quality journals.

pica-ae In reply to ShanSherazi [2011-11-18 11:54:49 +0000 UTC]

I am afraid of this happening to me, too
That is why I decided to pre-write most of my journal entries on a simple text editor and copying it into the real journal entry form later. This is a bit inconveniant, but at least that way I can be sure to have a back-up copy of any entry I write. That is of course until an (improved) draft version is avaiable on dA.

However, if you do have a blog and it contains the same information you want to share on dA, you could just copy the finished blog entry or parts of it into your dA journal (linking to your blog).

Spending less time in the journal writer lowers the risk of accidentally closing the window/ tab.

Did you know that journals comprise about 25% of posts submitted daily?

Probably because a journal is something you can punch out quickly to get your feelings out, whereas art takes more time and effort.

Journals are an integral part of the deviantART experience, and coming soon, they'll receive the spotlight they deserve.

No, they don't. Journals are not supposed to be presentation pieces, just announcements to people's watchers.

In all honesty I think this is really, really awful. It's like mixing up Journals with Deviations, and I don't like that. I just think it is really, really annoying and I haven't talked to a single person here who likes it!

We would all really appreciate it if the journal thing was just removed. Most of the comments below seem to say the same!

I really do not like it.

And my faved News are gone!

Journals are journals and News are news. Do not mixed them together, please.
You are NOT Facebook. Stop trying to be like one.

Where are the golden days were people do appreciate artwork, giving comments, and actually fave it than using bots to fave it for you?

Please change the journals back to the way they were, or at least give us the option to choose between Old and New systems. It took me an hour to figure out how to work the new system - submitting an ACTUAL deviation is easier then a journal now. Or are you going to change that too?

YumeMedley [2011-10-29 03:43:27 +0000 UTC]

I do not think this is a good idea. Many journals are targeted towards a very specific audience (watchers, friends, etc.). The old news was something more general that was for the public. Journals are not news to the rest of deviantART. This new feature should be removed. I would like to get back to reading about interesting articles from real journalists or hobbyist. Not insider jokes.

InertesInepties [2011-10-28 15:35:57 +0000 UTC]

What is this? I don't want my journal entries to be deviations! Nor do I care about popular journals. And the new journal editor is so confusing, there are too many options I don't need. Why go through sta.sh to edit a simple text? I bet this update thing has become a business. BOO!

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

General-EbonRose [2011-10-28 15:17:05 +0000 UTC]

Sooo, actual news doesn't exist anymore? I dunno. I'll probably get used to the change, but I think it's complicated things a bit. One of my issues is that a lot of Skins look really silly on the deviation-style pages. A lot of people had their journal pages organized because the journals were meant to be displayed with the widgets on the right.

But my biggest problem with this whole thing. I can't edit my group's blog entries. There's no button for it. Please. Fix this quickly.

Tajii-chan [2011-10-28 15:03:09 +0000 UTC]

As with all updates on deviantART, I will eventually grow used to this. But I'm not too happy with this change..

I personally think the new "News" page is too cluttered and that the addition of journals makes things more confusing. Writing my journals is incredibly difficult. If my internet lags, there's no way I can hope to write a journal entry. The layout is confusing and hard to navigate.

Also, the fact that journals can be "faved" also somehow irks me. If anything, journals are personal statements made by people; they're not portrayals of concepts like an art piece is. When I search, I want to search for art, NOT for journals. The two are not the same thing.

This new system doesn't make things easier; it just seems to make things more complicated. Sometimes change is great but I can't say that I'm particularly happy about this new idea..

This might have actually been a good idea if it were implemented in a way that wasn't totally awful (◡‿◡✿) you can barely even type a journal because the Stash page lags so bad
I don't want to see someone whining and crying about being offended as a top news story
the news page worked so much better before because only stuff that was actually news that people cared about got any attention. Now it's only a matter of how many watchers you have.
I"ve pretty much just resolved to move to blogspot instead of try and relearn all of these extra cHanGes that have sprung up out of literal nowhere

TheArcticFlame [2011-10-28 04:16:43 +0000 UTC]

I have to ask: how the heck are people supposed to see my news articles now? I'm not a popular deviant, so the stuff I post never gets on the front page. What if I have something I want people to see, a contest, a feature, or regular news? No one's going to see it!

I liked that news and journals were separate. Important articles (top news) used to show up on the bottom of the page. Now only popular journals by popular deviants will be seen. And not everyone is interested in personal journals. I want to know what's going on in the community, not a deviant's personal life.

I like the ability to fave journals, but keep it away from my favourite deviations. I want my fave news widget back on my page.
Separate news from journals. I want to see top news, not most faved journals.

I'm not saying that you're not allowed to give any feedback, I never said anything like that. What I'm saying is that the only comments I ever see on any change made by the dA team are always like "THIS SUXXX" and "Why do you have to ruin everything ? ALWAYS ADHGHTGK". Feedback is when you say what you don't like, calmly. And then suggest what could be done instead.
