Over the past few months we’ve been keeping a watchful eye on the way that members in our community have been offering points as payment for certain types of services within deviantART. We’ve seen all sorts of creative uses, from offering to critique your work for a few points, journal features for a few more points and my personal fav -- avatars, journal skins and any other sort of art commission for points.  It’s been great to see deviants use their experience and skills to fund their super group upgrades, prints purchases and even treating their friends and families to their very first item of deviantWEAR.

As time rolled on, we noticed a new trend creeping in. People were not just offering a small number of points for a task that they’d normally do as part of their daily deviating -- people were offering thousands of page views for hundreds of points, and there seemed to be no limit to the amount that could be purchased, or offered. It didn’t feel right, but we wanted to make sure that you guys agreed with us - and of course you did. So we’ve made some changes to reflect how we all feel about this matter of people essentially exploiting the system -- and ultimately exploiting you, the community.

You may not use or offer any script, bot or any other automated 3rd party service in exchange for deviantPOINTS. If you are looking to increase your exposure within the community, you may wish to consider our AdCast service as an alternative option.

Deviants offering excessive and automated services in exchange for points will have their submissions detailing the offer removed, and your account may also face additional suspension should you attempt to bypass our policies.

This policy covers any “POINTS-for” scheme involving a machine-driven attempt to show false results in a member’s statistical or performance-based metrics on deviantART. You may never use POINTS to solicit a vote from a member of deviantART in any participatory voting process conducted by deviantART.

In addition, you’ll now find an amendment to the deviantART Points Terms & Conditions, which reflects these changes. We’ve highlighted the changes below, however you can view the full agreement here .

We’ve also amended our Etiquette Policy to reflect the update. We’ve highlighted the changes for you below, however you can view the whole of the policy here .

We hope that this clarifies our stance on the matter, however if you have any questions please ask! We’re happy to help.

If this is true then you need to have $realitysquared change his journal. You can not get mad at users for doing something several staff members have openly stated that is okay to do.

Personally I really don't want someone to offer so many faves or pageviews in exchange for points. I only want someone to fave my work of they really like it. I enjoy giving points just for the pleasure of helping someone get a premium membership or buying something they like or collecting them to give out to others. I do not have any favors tied to my points. They are totally free.

I know I'm late to comment here (I've been away) but this seems like a very odd way of putting it. Surely using bots or scripts to increase pageviews (or whatever) is bad in itself? You make it sound like it's only forbidden in exchange for points. So if someone was doing it for free, or doing it for cash, that would be permitted - which seems a bit strange, but that's what the FAQ and Etiquette Policy seem to imply.

So are you going to ban users with usernames similar to "Pageviewsforpoints" and those that continue to advertise for them? Or are they safe until they have too many strikes against them?

You can do something as well with the people who offer more than 3500 points for a llama, they offer 3501 and it's annoying that, as well the llama trades expires so soon, why is that??

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

anime-manga-lover123 In reply to acg3fly [2018-08-25 08:03:06 +0000 UTC]

Why do you think people offering 3500 points for a llama is annoying?
I'd love to get 3500 points from someone just because I gave him/her a llama lol.

Though to be honest, I highly doubt there is someone who would do such a thing. Most people who put up points on the llama trade, only offer 1 point for one llama. The highest price I've seen in llama trade in my entire life is 10 points. I've never seen anyone who offered 3500 points for one llama.

Pein-and-Sakura In reply to acg3fly [2011-08-11 03:05:17 +0000 UTC]

Well the best way to fix that would be to raise the limit on a llama transaction. Someone lucky would get 3501 points xD

If a persons artistic talents are near or at the beginers stage and their page views are at a stagering amount, it's pretty easy to figure out they were up 2 something irregular.

They are only fooling themselves, you have 2 feel sorry for people like this and reilize the pageviews are like their medication......just hope there is help out there

PageviewLaboratory In reply to isgay [2011-07-31 13:38:28 +0000 UTC]

[link] It's apparently against the rules now
If mass-faving is ban-able, it's easy to ban someone if detected.
But it's impossible to know who's incrementing someone's pageviews, might raise a little suspicion, but they probably won't ban anybody because of it. Somebody would just try to get someone else banned.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

isgay In reply to PageviewLaboratory [2011-08-01 02:11:52 +0000 UTC]

Considering they have a filter on the faving now (and everything under the sun), it wouldn't be as easy to detect if someone was using some type of automation, assuming they have random increments in their favs, because it could very well be an individual fav'ing quickly.

dA could check proxy logs for pageview raising, but I doubt they'd really contact thousands of addresses to attempt to link an IP with an account.

Oh also, note me what happened to !prosaix

I'm happy to see this. Even if page views are not something to be dwelt upon, it really rubs me the wrong way to know that years of user experience on the site can be artificially generated. Of course this wont stop people from doing that, but at least they wont be exploiting the points system in order to achieve it, and at least you're doing -something- to show that this is not approved of.

They didn't bother me.

Personally I think the option to entirely disabling the pageview counter on your own profile page would render all so called scams cq initiatives invalid and useless. I would love to be able to get that option and I think a lot of people here would too.

Also, I don't see any difference to, for instance, the FeatureForPoints groups who ask points for a feature in their journal
Or they going to be banned as well?

HummingbirdsandLions In reply to RoyallyCrimson [2011-07-30 07:10:01 +0000 UTC]

There is an option to disable your pageviews. If you go to settings then click on browsing and in the general browsing section you can untick see pageview and you won't see them any more.
