The island is no longer the same strip of land that the wolves once knew. Long gone are the simple days and the peace of the United Pack has all but dissolved in the wake of death and magic.

' Adapting has always been difficult for Vashti, but not for the reasons one might expect. With locked jaws, she clings to the principles of what was even as she tries her damndest to embrace the new ways of the present. Her struggle is best represented in her relationship with Loch. Although he personifies the things she fears and hates, she loves him far too much to leave him behind. Knowing how much he dreads change only compels her to keep him close while she struggles to choose which of the three new alphas she'll follow and attempts to embrace a life that does not require her to dabble in the dark and fetid ways of her past.

Her past, however, has been especially loud. As Loch finds a sense of power in Osirus’s death, rejoicing in the fact that both he and his ward survived where the great Alpha did not, Vashti is left wounded by the loss of someone she viewed as a source of redemption. The following dissolution of Tundes only makes matters worse as secret idols and mentors all go their separate ways.

In the end, she and Loch choose to follow Lennart to the eastern shores purely because of the pack's proximity to the death eater's origin within Ithunwood.
