Chronophontes [2019-10-26 16:27:27 +0000 UTC]

This is why it took the Mongols fifty years to conquer southern China.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hubery-Zhang In reply to Chronophontes [2019-10-27 16:44:13 +0000 UTC]

Yep, one reason is the mountainous terrain of southern China, which makes it suitable for defense but not for attack.
In the long run, the north, which has a large area and concentrated distribution of plains, has the advantage of unifying and influencing other areas of China. Therefore, all the successive unified regimes in China have located their political core area in the north. Otherwise, the regime will not last long.

Hubery-Zhang In reply to WatchTheSkiies [2019-08-01 17:18:48 +0000 UTC]

Haha, I am curious about how to translate the contents of the Ten Trials(百字碑) in foreign languages, and the yellow millet dream(黄粱一梦) has been realized by today's virtual games!

WatchTheSkiies In reply to Hubery-Zhang [2019-08-01 19:37:59 +0000 UTC]

I wonder what I might have lost by not reading them in chinese too. But someone once told me that "the sound of the rain needs no translation", so I hope I'm not that far away from the roots.

By the way, do you know any books on the basics of Confucianism? I've read a lot about Taoism and Buddhism, but I haven't read single book about Confucianism yet.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hubery-Zhang In reply to WatchTheSkiies [2019-08-02 08:43:38 +0000 UTC]

You can look at the Four Books and Five Classics (四书五经), plus the Trimetric Classic (三字经) and the Thousand Character Text (千字文).

The three books recommended to read first are the Analects of Confucius (论语), Trimetric Classic and Thousand Character Text.

Some Confucian ideas are borrowed from Taoism, so the Confucian books contain some Taoist books and contents.
