“Thomas, why precisely are we doing this?” Loki murmured out of the corner of his mouth, eying their landlady suspiciously as she took up position opposite them with a camera.
“Because she needs pictures of her tenants for her new website.” Tom said, standing next to him and, much to Loki’s irritation, snaking a friendly arm around his waist.
“But why US?” Loki demanded, attempting futilely to wriggle away from the human. “Surely she has other cretins whom she can rope in for this ridiculous charade.”
“Yeah, but she asked for us.” Tom admitted, licking his thumb and swiping at a shaving nick on his chin from earlier to ensure he looked tidy.
“But why?” Loki insisted, glaring at the woman who was retrieving the batteries from her camera and shaking them, vaguely.
Tom sighed, rubbing his eyes wearily. “You can’t just be glad that we’re out in the sun on a nice day, can you?” And it was a lovely day. He smiled as a soft, cool spring breeze ruffled his hair.
“No.” Loki said, shortly. “Why of all people did she decide on us for the photo?”
Staring resignedly up at the dancing leaves of the tree above him, Tom shook his head. “Because she thinks we’re a gay couple and she wants to make her website look good by being all diverse and accepting, alright?”
Loki reared back, staring at him in disbelief. “You cannot be serious?”
“I am.”
“Well then I am leaving. She can rope in someone else to stand in for your imaginary lover.” Loki attempted to pull away but Tom’s grip locked tight around his ribcage and wouldn’t budge.
Speaking low, trying not to let his lips move, Tom began to speak in a low urgent voice. “We are GOING to do this because a certain SOMEONE managed to set fire to the kitchen for the third time this year,” A faint sheepish look flitted briefly across Loki’s features at that. “And we need her to get someone to come in and repair it and so we need to be in her good books. So unless you want to magic the kitchen back to normal again, you’re going to have to stand here and smile nicely and have your photo taken. Alright, pumpkin?”
“Ready boys?” Their landlady called from where she had backed away to get them in frame.
“Ready!” Tom called with one final sidelong hiss of ‘Smile!’ to Loki.
Rage burning in his gut, Loki forced a grimace onto his face and stiffly levered his arm up around Tom’s shoulders.
“Ready.” He growled.
“Alright, three, two, one . . . Smi-“
A heavy weight slammed into the back of Loki’s head and he stumbled forwards, kept up only by Tom’s support.
“What the devil-?!” He yelped.
“Stitch!” Tom laughed, reaching up to scratch the ears of the creature on Loki’s shoulders. “What have I told you about dive-bombing people?”
“Eh, eh!” Stitch bounced up and down on Loki’s shoulders eagerly.
“Oh, do you want to be in the photo too?”
“Eh!”
“Oh, that’s perfect!” Their landlady enthused. “Stay still everyone! Three, two, one . . . Smile!”

A copy of the photo was pushed through the door a few days later with a little note saying that, although it would have been nice if Mr. Loki had been smiling a bit more, she was definitely going to use the photo.
It thus earned a permanent place of honour on the fridge door.
Despite Loki’s many attempts to destroy it.
