Description And so, for my final Dark Fanart... Randall Boggs. What better for Halloween than a monster?

#31--the "gator"...after Randall was banished somewhere in the deep south of the US, he was mistaken for a gator and got the hell smacked out of him by a woman with a shovel and a dislike of saurians.

Unable to get back to Monstropolis, Randall took to the swamps, scaring the living hell out of anyone who got near...and dining on an occasional unlucky wayfarer, perhaps. Those sharp teeth evolved for a reason, I figure....

How'd you like to be strolling along and have this thing lurch out at you?

I remember the kid who screamed: "MAMA 'NOTHER GATOR GOT IN THE HOUSE!" And his mom beats the crap out of him with the shovel. That never failed to amuse me as a kid but what really made me laugh during the scene, is when you can hear Randall's voice crack on the last scream.

I would absolutely LOVE to run across Randall Boggs in my swamp excursions! This would be my absolute dream come true! You see, I'm a huge fan of Randall, and have been since I first saw the movie. I do not see him, or any other scaly creatures, as evil, nor do I see him as just another carnivorous animal, no different from a cougar or bear. He's a PERSON, as much as we are, just not a HUMAN person(although the monsters ARE descended from early humans, according the "Monsters, Inc." DVD. Randall is no more evolved to survive in a Louisiana swamp than any of us are, IF he survived that beating. You see, the woman's violent attack on him wasn't motivated by her dislike of saurians, per se, but by her STOMACH; in Louisiana, "gators" are among the Five Major Food Groups! She didn't want Randall out of her "house"-she wanted him in her jambalaya pot! I'd find it hard to fathom Randall resorting to eating a human, given his understandable terror of them, but humans eating HIM-well, THAT is a definite possibility that he would live in fear of every moment of his pitiful existance in the swamp!

Randall happens to be my favorite character too, actually. but he's still pretty ruthless and evil. And I admit I rather enjoyed relegating him to the swamps. (I missed the part about them being evolved from early humans though, interesting!)

I've had alligator meat. It's strange, but pretty good.

Sharkluvr beat me to it, lol, since I had to go to work and the internet is blocked at worked, or at least, about 95% of it is. I'm probably old enough to be your mama, or grandmama, even, and if there is one thing I've learned in my decades of experience, it's that with very, very rare exceptions, people(and yes, I do consider the monsters in "Monsters, Inc." to be "people", just not Homo sapiens people)are NOT born "evil" or "good", but have equal capacity for both, depending on their situation. When I was an ignorant, know-it-all kid, I believed that there were only "good" people and "bad" people, and that I certainly could NEVER be one of the latter! I learned, through the very tough School of Hard Knocks, just what a lie that was! I found myself, in my mid-twenties, in a situation very similar to Randall's-being controlled and manipulated by a boss who hated me, and being nearly led down a path of self-destruction because I believed that what I was doing was the key to success, the path to climb that ladder. Looking back on how easily I fell prey to that, and what it did to me emotionally and behaviorally, it is very easy to understand how Randall would have become as we see in the movie. Evil? NO. Fallible and at the end of his proverbial rope, mentally and emotionally, yes. When you really stop and think about what was involved, from HIS perspective, during the two and one-half years(according to Roz)that he'd been down there in the dungeon-like basement, working on that machine, justifying its existance as a means of solving both the "energy crisis" and his lack of respect(self and otherwise), and how the whole debacle with "the kid" would have looked from that perspective, he takes on a whole different appearance, but for many people, they have to go through something similar themselves before they can really comprehend that. Ruthless? More like desperate, like a cornered animal with nowhere left to run, believing that his career and possibly even his life was in dire jeopardy. Given that Waternoose WAS calling the shots and in control, and given that he clearly despised Randall(even though he was more than willing to use him like a whore), AND given that Waternoose was willing to "banish" an old friend(Sulley)to the Himalayas to die, what do you suppose he'd have done to Randall if Randall had disobeyed him, or failed to carry out his orders?

I agree people aren't born evil. c: And like I said, i agree that Waternoose is a bigger schmuck than Randall. And as I said above I think we can all agree that Randall is an awesome character either way! C:

As for age, I;m not sure how old you are but I bet I;m older than you think. I get guessed as much younger all the time. Even in person. I just turned 34 a couple of days ago.

Sharkluvr In reply to hyenacub [2010-11-01 19:11:16 +0000 UTC]

I really love how you drew him (your amount of scale details amaze me! ), i wouldn't think of Randall as the villain in the monsters inc.
Waternoose is the real villain. It kinda ticks me off that the old man is looked at as the "loving grandfatherly type" when it was his plan all along (he actually INTENDED harm to Boo and others) and Randall became the slapstick of the century (!)- from getting thrown into the trash shoot and coming out sliced and diced in the Tokyo "Ride and Seek" to being painted on a wheel in one of their parades so it seemed like he was being simultaneously and comically CRUSHED!
Plus, Randall was illegally banished by Sulley and Mike at the end of the movie to a place they INTEND him to be killed. He was thrown into a trailer located in Louisiana where people EAT gators. The woman who bashed him with a shovel wasn't trying to get him out of her house. She was trying to EAT him!
The reason why Randall seemed so "edgy" in the film was because of his sleep deprivation. He had worked (for more than two years) on the Scream Extractor, devoting longs nights, lunch periods, holidays, and every spare minute. Because of this, he also lost a tremendous amount of weight (as you can, at many times of the film, see his ribs and his backbone). It's also probable that he took energy pills to stay up.
In addition to that, the film never gave any evidence that Randall had any hatred towards Boo. One thing you should keep in mind is that Randall, LIKE OTHER MONSTERS, didn't view humans as sentiments. They thought the kids were as toxic and deadly as a nuclear column rolling out of the factory. Mike is an example of this. First, his ideas consist of "an enormous slingshot" "releasing [Boo] into the wild" and leading her through the wrong door with a pencil to lure "it"- ideas on how quickly he can dispose of her. He treated Boo worse than Randall ever did. When Randall places her into the chair, he checks her restraints to make sure she doesn't hurt herself. When Waternoose gives the orders to "Finish them off" and "There can't be any witnesses", notice how Randall tries not to hurt Boo the entire time.
To add on to that, in the door vault scene where Randall finally got a hold of Boo, she starts to flail and slip. Noticing that she's going to fall, Randall pulls her closer to him. Many people don't stop to think what Randall would do with Boo once he got her, other than "Oh, he's evil, so he's gonna do some evil thing." Randall couldn't go back to the machine because Sullivan had destroyed it and the CDA were around the entire building. His options were either A- He could drop the kid and get the whole thing over with, or B- He was taking her to her door!
And then, Waternoose double-crosses Randall, taking back Boo's door and telling the CDA to arrest anyone who came out of the the door vault. The crab is blaming the ENTIRE thing on Randall. It also makes you wonder how Waternoose knew to get Boo's door. If the crab's plan had worked out, Mike, Sullivan, and Boo would all be dead and Randall would come back. But how did Waternoose know to call Boo's door, specifically? Did he already have the impression that Randall might have had a soft side for the kid? As much as to take her back to her door?
Randall also had no reason to believe that Boo meant anything to Sullivan, until the very few seconds of the end. He thought that Sullivan and Mike were using her to get him arrested for personal agendas.
And yet, even though Mike and Sullivan took the laws into their own hands for revenge (which at times can actually be a felony), they're still looked upon as heroes! While those two have their glory, Randall is left for dead, bashed, blamed, and molded into the symbol of evil, despite context clues proving otherwise.

If the sequel is sure to come on November 12, 2012, then the only scenarios will be these:

1. Randall won't appear or even be mentioned. Pixar will create another person for Mike and Sulley to beat up/defeat.

2. Randall will become the 2-D boring villain out for revenge with no point in being evil except just for the sake of it (WhatTheHeck, right!?). I would expect this to come out of a Saturday morning cartoon, but PIXAR?! This can only mean two things: not only has Pixar hit rock bottom and refused to listen to their fans (there are Randall fans writing to Pixar), but this time Randall will DIE!!! Unlike the first movie, the producers will no doubt that he's dead.

3. While Randall may start out on a sour note, he's gradually changed through a person or element into a more understandable character- deeper and not the "born evil, live evil, die evil" person.

Ultimately, I'd choose scenario three.

I apologize for the long paragraph rant. I love your drawing of him.
