Description This will be the deviation that I submit to the =Myst-fanclub 's "Stranger Than Ever" contest! I love drawing storms, and I love the Stoneship Age. Maybe I should have tried this one first!

So--here is the Stranger in Stoneship, making his way to the telescope at the top of the slippery, very high scaffolding that hasn't been maintained in who knows how long. That has to be a rough climb--especially if it's windy and raining.

RealMYST's Stoneship Age was awesome--with the rain and lightning, so I based this picture on that...with just a bit of enhancement! I never need much of an excuse to draw a storm, and Stoneship was the perfect Age for it. Yellowish skies, gusting winds, lighting, and lots of rain. Perfect.

The light o the lighthouse is not on because when I played this, it was forever before I figured out how to get inside it! So I discovered the telescope first.

I worked several hours on this over two or three days, and I am very pleased with the outcome. It's probably one of my best. : )

Edit: I have fixed a few things about this picture, including some of the anatomy on the figure, and the pesky sharp line on the horizon. (Thanks, ~kittyninjafish and *ShuffleStar for that last one. And blurring it worked fine!)

Hey!  Thank you for the kind words!  Stoneship is my favorite Age ever, in any of the games.  It always has been.  I could live there.  XD  I am glad  that i made it come alive for you.  It's always what i try to do in ART.  c:

I hope that you get your games soon then, and best of luck in the weight loss.  I need to do that myself.  XD    RealMYST is actually pretty good.  Yo've not played any of the sequels?  They're pretty good too, though Myst and Riven are the best, in my humble opinion.

I have played all the sequels, but I'm currently taking classes and working on a new A.S. Degree in Chemistry, so I barely have time to draw unless it's for a class assignment (such as a presentation). Once I'm done, I'll be able to replay all the games start to finish, but probably not for another year or so.

Riven was an incredible sequel, and it has been a hard one to top. My favorite ages are the Selenetic Age and Amateria. Now, if I could combine the structures from Amateria and the Mechanical Age and move them to the Selenetic Age, I'd have an ideal vacation house...

Take  care!

Best of luck with the degree!  See I thought the Selentic age was a bit too barren for my tastes.

It's cool seeing such a young stranger! Really makes it look like an underdog situation~! I'm in this age right now so yay~!

My game personae tend to be kids.    And yeah I like the idea of a kid discovering the Linking Book...makes more sense to me.  Kids love exploring and are really curious and are probably more likely than an dult to pick u some old book and touch a moving picture...heheh!  Thanks!  I LOVE that Age.  It's my favorite.  That and Amateria from Exile.

I know it was ported onto the PS1 but other than that I don't think they did it again.

The rain effect is nice, but what would make the theme more dramatic is if you added more waves crashing against the bridge and rocks, and the foam mist they create, etc. Overall, the color scheme is pretty solid. Good job.

You did a great job at portraying a storm. It looks dark, the waves are crashing, the person's hair is being blown by the wind...Really great.

The figure does look really good and I can't even notice where the edit was doen on the background. The lightning looks really good and I can really tell it a storm. You made the slanted rain and the sea look great.

Persnickitii [2009-07-21 02:48:56 +0000 UTC]

Mmm, nice atmosphere on this one. The chaotic nature of the rolling waves, thundering skies, and blowing winds comes across very well. Topped off with the murky green and yellowish tones, this is a well thought out picture.

I like how the character is painstakingly making his way along the crooked bridge. Again, I'm getting a real sense of place with your art and that's a good feeling.

The background would have been much better if it were faded and misted somewhat. Storms tend not to be so clear and a little fog and blur on the lightning would have given it a more honest appearance.

The water splashing onto the bridge also could have used some sharper reflections. Tell me, what kind of brushes do you use to paint? This has a very airbrushed look and the fuzziness really detracts from any visual punch it could have had.

You're doing great on these. Keep it up.

hyenacub In reply to Persnickitii [2009-07-21 02:55:09 +0000 UTC]

Hmm. I never thought to use a mist! Makes a lot of sense. You'd think in all the times I go out into the middle of storms I'd notice. I hope I saved my Photoshop file with all the layers.

Water splashing...new territory for me. If you happened to know any good tutorials that actually explain the steps instead of just show them...that'd be awesome! I have trouble finding tutorials that explain the steps. I can't do things if I don't understand why it works that way. A weird thing for me.

Hmm. I dunno what you mean by "kind", but I have several shape brushes...some hard, some soft, some rough, some patterned. All part of my working on textures.... I did leave the lighthouse fuzzy because it's not the focus. Bad move, maybe.

Again, thanks for your input!

Thanks for the kind words! : )

I think it is, yes. It's got night and day, which is pretty cool...you can walk wherever, instead of going forward in disorienting bursts like the original games, and the new Age, Rime, is pretty cool.

The only thing I wish they'd also changed is the blue and red pages. you can still only get one at a time. That always bugged me. Are they so heavy you can't handle carrying both of them, or what? lol

Grogee [2009-06-29 18:32:00 +0000 UTC]

Needs darker shading on the wooded area.

Could use some more detail on the water.

It all needs more confident lines and maybe just completely get rid of the rock structure on the left. That actually adds a kind of security to the picture, if you removed that and added more water, it would make the character seem more alone.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hyenacub In reply to Grogee [2009-06-29 21:58:25 +0000 UTC]

The...wooded area? You mean the planks? Hmm. Yeah it could use some darker shading.

True, water is not easy for me.

It would make it seem more precarious, true. But this is a depiction of a world in a game, and the rock's supposed to be there. Thanks very much, I'll see about getting some better shading in there.

Just blur it out XD The rest of the picture is kinda blurry so the horizon looks out of place. Other than that it's very good, reminds me of Myst^^
