The future of armored warfare in my humble opinion.

I'm not sure that these will replace the MBT, but I think they could well replace the tracked howitzer on the fire support mission.

Oh, no, I never believed that. The heavy armor and staying power of the MBT are essencial. But modern warfare does need platforms with high mobility for rapid deployment before the MBTs can get in the theater, and the MGSs are like a renaissance of the light tank, in my opinion. Something to provide heavy firepower and some armor before the heavier assets can get into the field.

Hope I'm making sense.

I think were expressing ourselves differently, but thinking the same sort of way; these things can "shoot and scoot" faster than tracked SPGs and way outrange light tanks (AMX-13, Scorpion, Sheridan to pick about the most recent examples).

Indeed! I believe they are an important part of several changes we will see in the way wars are fought. Hope we never actually know how important such changes are, and the wars stay small and localized (as it's too naive to think they wil ever go away).

Yeah.
JGSDF are currently developing such a combat vehicle (the Maneuver Combat Vehicle).

Indeed, and it seems like the perfect postal picture for the class: light, maneuverable, devastating firepower and low costs. I do believe it will serve Japan well.

The Italians have another good example, the Centaur B1, which already has combat experience and has shown his qualities.
