Description First, we saw a world where Captain America replaced Superman, leading the Justice League of America, and toppling the alien menace known as Brainiac...

Then, we saw a world where Superman was raised in a world filled with Avengers, Mutants, and the supreme being known as Galactus...

Now, we go to yet another world...

The world of Spider-Man: The Darkest Night...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FEBRUARY.
Many people call Metropolis the 'City of Tomorrow'. If that is the case, then Gotham City is most certainly the 'City of Yesterday'. Buildings are abandoned and condemned. Crime runs rampid. Mob bosses and organized crime continues to run the city, with the police and DA unable to do anything but look on helplessly. It is a time of depression, but with all concepts of life, the darkest has a dawn. In the distance, a glimpse of hope can be seen.
Spider-Man.
It has been a month since billionaire Peter Wayne donned the costume and abilities to make a difference in the city that robbed him of his loving parents, and since then, the amazing Spider-Man has been using his great powers as responsibly as possible. And yet, in his mind, its simply not enough. Granted, the purse snatchers, rapists, and car jackers of the world are finding themselves to be swung up from the streets, but in Peter's mind, its simply not enough. The Rupert Thornes and Carmine Falcones of the city still leave the city in turmoil. However, Peter knows how he could make an even bigger impact...
Peter knows that even with his fancy knew Wayne-Tech computer, he still doesn't have the means to know where and where crimes are being committed. Everything that he has been able to asist with up until now has either been after the crime had already been committed, or simply by a chance of luck. Somehow, Peter needs to be on the inside, and his way inside just happens to be plotted out due to an off-handed comment by Uncle Al:
"You do what you can, Master Peter. After all...it's not as if you are a police officer..."
Peter can't help but have a small smirk form.
The Gotham City Police Depertment (G.C.P.D.) has spent established decades trying to clean up the streets of Gotham, so far with little to no success. The G.C.P.D. is, simply put, a small fish in a big pond, and even with the strong willed and focus Commissioner of Police, Jim Gordon, leading the troops, only so much can be done.
That's where Peter Wayne comes in.
Gordon, himself, is a little caught off guard when the richest man in Gotham City came in to apply for a job in the crime scene investigation department as a crime scene photographer. Peter is more or less honest with Gordon to explain his actions: after the murder of his parents, Peter felt a need to somehow help loosen the grip criminals had on Gotham, so since he is a detailed photographer, it only made sense to join the force and lend his skills. After going through training and testing (testing well above other cadets who have been training for years), Peter is given a job and a top-of-the-line camera, welcomed into the G.C.P.D.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Meanwhile, the very mob bosses Spider-Man is trying to stop are getting worried. The concept of a vigilante in Gotham threatens to undo their business. Because of fears, Thorne and Falcone (Gotham's two biggest mob bosses) have decided to band together, and bring in an outside force of their own as a means to stop Spider-Man.

Some in the criminal underworld have called him 'The Smartest Man Alive'. A puzzler. A questioner. A man who can deduce and solve any question that is ever asked to him. He is brought in to answer the one question the thugs of Gotham can ask only in whisper: Who is Spider-Man.

Clad in green with a fetish for question marks, he is The Riddler, and he is ready to unlock the puzzle that is Spider-Man.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meanwhile, back in G.C.P.D, Peter has met some rather interesting co-workers who he suddenly finds himself side by side with in the field: Police Chief Miles O'Hara, Detective Harvey "The Bullet" Bullock, Detective Rene Montoya, Lt. Crispus Allen, and Lt. Jim Corrigan. However, amongst the various officers and detectives in G.C.P.D, it was only a matter of time before Peter caught up with an old friend:
The Waynes and the Dents have been friends for years, so much so that Peter Wayne has had a best friend in Harvey Dent since he was a child. Despite being a few years older then Peter, Harvey has always stuck by Peter's side. However, when Harvey went on the College, passed the bar, and eventually became the District Attorney of Gotham, he and Peter eventually lost touch. But back side by side in the same field, it was as if they never seperated.
However, as good as it was to see his old friend Harvey, someone else had caught Peter's eye.
Her name was Barbara Gordon. Daughter of Police Commissioner Gordon, Barbara was a meek first year college student who worked part time as a librarian. When Peter first laid eyes on her, his jaw dropped. Long red hair. Piercing blue eyes. And a smile that lit up the room. They barely had a moment to talk, but almost immediatly, Peter was head over heels.
But Peter knew that he could never make a move. He had to set aside his feelings and focus on the mission. Thanks to an APB, Peter is able to sneak into his Spider-Man costume and break up a gun shipment at Gotham City docks. This action costs Falcone millions in damages.
Getting desperate, Falcone and Thorne continue to fund the Riddler, who at this point has come down to three possible condidates for Spider-Man's identity: Gotham State student, and quarterback for the GSU Nightwings, Michael Carter, billionaire and crime scene photographer Peter Wayne, and Gotham District Attorney, Harvey Dent. Through research and estimations, The Riddler singles out Harvey Dent as the best possible candidate for Spider-Man. Throne and Falcone are pleased by the news, now able to take out Gotham's DA and resident super hero at the same time.
That night, while Peter and Harvey get together for dinner and discuss old times (Peter figuring 'what's the worst that could happen if Spider-Man takes a night off), the two are ambushed by members of the Falcone crime family. Peter is seemingly knocked out and tossed aside as Dent is taken away by force. Immediatly, Peter changes into his Spider-Man costume and follows the getaway van.
At Thorne's mansion, Riddler demands that Dent reveal himself as Spider-Man. Dent immediatly bursts into laughter, seeing the Riddler as more of a joke then a threat. Riddler doesn't take Dent's remarks in jest as he takes one of the thug's guns and points it at Dent's head. Before he can pull the trigger, Spider-Man bursts in and webs the gun away, reeling the Riddler in and clocking him out with a single punch. As Spider-Man quickly deals with the rest of the mob crew, he activates the camera in his utility belt, snapping pictures of Throne and Falcone's involvement in Dent's kidnapping. With the mob snagged in webbing, Spidey frees Dent before handing him the film from his camera. The police burst in just a Spidey swings away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

With Spider-Man's photos and Dent's testimony, Falcone, Thorne, and the Riddler are all found guilty of kidnapping and attempted murder. With all three shipped off the Arkham Asylum, two of the most powerful mafia families in Gotham are almost immediatly swept away, making Gotham City just a little bit brighter.

Harvey Dent personally comes to Commissioner Gordon and tells him how Spider-Man saved the day, and how he is, without a doubt, a hero. Gordon says that he'll make that judgement himself.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As Spider-Man enjoys a rare moment to simply enjoy web-swinging through the city, a giant bright light suddenly gets his attention. The light reflects on the clouds and actually makes his own webbed logo. Spidey follows the source of the light and discovers that its coming from the rooftop of G.C.P.D. headquarters, and Jim Gordon himself is standing next to it. Spider-Man touches down on the roof, and for the first time ever, Spider-Man and Jim Gordon meet face to face.
"I've been watching you, Spider-Man. Im not sure how I feel about vigilantes in this city, but...yesterday, you saved the DA of Gotham, and stopped two of the biggest criminals tihis city has ever known. I really hope I won't end up regretting this, son, but...we need you."
"Look, Commissioner. I don't do what I do for noteriety, fanfare, or even a thank you. I do this because the city needs me. I have the power to make a difference, so its my responsibility to do so."
"Hmmmmmm...power and responsibility. I like that."
"So..." *Spider-Man knocks on the signal light.* "What's this thing about?"
"That clown with the question marks. The Riddler. I get the unusual feeling that he's not going to be the only costumed maniac who will be threatening this city. If anything else comes up like what happened last night...anything that we simply cannot handle on our own...if we flash this signal, will we be able to count on you to respond to it?"
Spider-Man turns his back on Gordon before shooting a web to the nearest building before looking back over his shoulder.
"Always."
With that, Spider-Man swings away back into the night sky as Gordon steps forward, a smirk growing on his face. On this night, Spider-Man has earned the respect of Jim Gordon, his newest ally in the war against crime...
EPILOGUE:
Arkham Asylum.
The dirty, dark walls echo with the sounds of moaning, yelling, and screaming, but in the plastic covered cell of one room labeled 'NIGMA, E', the former riddler sits in the middle of his cell, legs crossed, bound in a straight jacket. Slowly, his eyes open as a smile grows on his face, a single word being whispered from his lips...
"Wayne."
Maybe if the story fits together. It might be a little difficult to feature an alien demigod being bitten by a radioactive spider, but I can give it a shot.
Daaamn this is just AWESOME. I love the fact that there's an image with your little stories. Really... brightens the story that much more.
Your image is wonderful! It's colored so WELL! And holy crap--! There's so much going on with it! Hehe. I love the fact you put just as much detail in your backgrounds as you do with your main characters. That's awesome.
Lovely piece here!
I've been practicing with my backgrounds, but Im taking a bit of a break with 'Spider-Man: Darkest Knight' and focusing on my DC Reboot.
Once I get all 52 drawings down, I'll get back to it.
