Description A Shonisaurus quickly breaches over the surface of an usually calm Triassic sea.
Shonisaurus ("lizard from the Shoshone Mountains"), is the largest known ichthyosaur species, and probably the largest marine reptile known, with Mauisaurus, a plesiosaur, coming narrowly close. It featured a nearly toothless snout (with teeth only at the front), and long, narrow flippers. It measured as much as 21 metres long, a size comparable to many modern whales.

I have to tell you, Shonisaurus has always been one of my favourite ichthyosaurs. I tried to go for a large whale look, but it seems that all of them are very monochromatic...

Considering it had no teeth, is it possible that it ate plancton and other small sea animals?

Possibly. Or it ate soft-bodied animals by sucking them in, like beaked whales.
If so, it's even cooler, because it's even more similar than it already is to modern large whales.

This just shows that certain ecological nichés are timeless.

Yup, huge as an average whale.
Indeed, it was thought that they grew up to 15m, but a specimmen found in British Columbia (at least, I think it was British Columbia) is estimated at that length.

Jajajajaja, no, man, Shonisaurus suena chido.

No creo. Eso sería odio hacia tu prole.
