You have made it? The hands? Surprisingly!

it's made from a doll and other components
so it's not sculpted.

wow awesome i was scrolling thrue sculpture work at DA for inspiration for my diploma work.and i found this! this is practically the same as i imagined my work so i guess now ill be a bit of a copy cat..anywayz my idea was how technology kills human being...it was in a some devouring form - something like this ( man made of gear and stuff).screaming machinery and somethin like that...but i really wanted to ask about this plastic its made of. you see i thought i could mold bronze but it would be a problem welding all the gear to a bronze body...so i am in a bit of a disadvantage..could you unleash this secret of how you did it with plastic and what kind of plastic is it?...ok...after seeing this work of yours i feel kinda bad for doin somethin a bit familiar.and it so happens aswell that ghost in the shell inspired me too .. guess this coincidence happens sometimes

well the doll is a real plastic doll that I cut in pieces - so I didn't make it (I have way too many ideas and not enough time )
don't worry about doing something that is similar in representation - I mean you had an idea, and it happens that you're probably not the first... but you might have a different approach to it and that is always good - and the idea behind is actually different

using a plastic doll is a bad idea - painting on soft plastic, rubber etc. requires special painting (I used normal spray paint and waited a few (?) months for it to completely dry)
but you could use Fimo, Sculpey, or other polymer clays to make it - and maybe then do a cast in resin (easier to glue afterwards)
I don't really have an idea on how to attach the gears - hot glue, special all-purpose glue?
you can also ask these guys : *XETuseer and maybe ~Transmit-and-Receive
they seem to use a lot of materials and I'm sure they know more about glues than me
you can also wonder in a store where they sell these kinds of things and ask the people there for information on glues and materials

hope this helps a little

the mechanical body is a deterministic extension of the conciousness. i'm not sure if conciousness=soul, though.

it's rather the other way around
consciousness is the product of the body (brain)
the way you act is a direct product of the synapses you have in your brain (in interaction with the environment and all)
anyway this is where most research in neuro-science points to and if you think about it physics and science in general points in that direction

here I used soul as consciousness so my answer to the question would by yes (though you can argue on the use of the term "deterministic" which... well it's a long story and I have to revisit it a little)

as for the soul as a separate entity from the body... that's a highly improbable speculation

well, i guess this is rather a thin line than some solid ground. i recently stumbled upon a book saying something like "the conciousness creates the materia", and somehow i line-up with this ideea. offcourse is not about our individual conciousness, but one above, be it (the concept of) god or whatever you like to call it.

some years ago i started to read (but never finished) a book by Draganescu, The Ring of the Material World, and in it i found out for the first time, about the information layer of the universe (the other two being materia and energy, though i'm confused here, where do the separate?). the information layer is supposed to contain all the laws that control anything in the universe, from shapes to movement and so on, and the memory of anything that happened. so i guess that's the conciousness. without it matter won't form out of energy to give out energy and so on.
later on, after abandoning the book because it got to explaining things trough mathematics and formulas, i started to "develop" on my own

you must make some animations in the old style. like drawing each frame manually, and keeping it minimal. short stuff like 1 to five minutes at maximum for begining. that's because your images are powerfull enough, but time/motion would take them to a whole new level. and i feel weird to tell you this, since you already know it.

kudos!

depends which books you read and what the authors pretend
there are many who pretend many things and use very "intriguing" metaphors and personifications but don't prove anything
it's like the interpretations of quantum physics... there aren't really any that work (though there is research in that direction), but we know the theory works because we get VERY GOOD predictions (the best any theory has ever given)
I have a scientific degree and did a lot of physics including quantum physics and in my experience there are many statements in the literature that are way too exaggerated and not too rigorous if you start looking in depth

talking about the information layer of the world is exactly equivalent to saying that there are laws that act upon the matter-energy in the universe
as for the memory... I don't think you really need it to explain things, the universe could just as simply evolve from the current state... you don't need to know the previous states in theories in physics
I would rather say that information is something carried by matter-energy and not something outside of it
anyway as long as these statements don't bring anything new to the theory and stuff that can be tested, but ONLY say that the world is like "this" and "that", they don't really serve any purpose from a scientific point of view.

for now I trust the mathematical theory more than all attempts to make sense of it
even top scientists say over the top things... which they really shouldn't... over the top things are for artists to say

you're right for the animations, I have a few plans for short drawn animations, but I'll probably start with some stop-frame animations with very few movements and not continuous ones

cheers

i had a feeling this would get a bit too complicated for me to carry on.
let's just say the information blends with energy to shape it, that's how i imagine things. but, i repeat, thin line and stuff.

stop motion sounds tasty (or is it something different from stop-frame? i never heard of stop-frame), it might require more imagination and skill to make it good, so work on it

yeah well things like that always get complicated and discussions could go on for a long time

stop-frame - I meant the same thing as stop-motion
one day I'll make it work
but now it's sleep time or my system will automatically shut down

the doll part makes me nervous.. ( i hate dolls )

but.. the concept is brilliant. you must have access to a fairly good metalworking lab. is this in your home or a school facility?

i love the juxtaposition of the organic and the inorganic .. especially machinery like what you've done here, but also computer or electronic parts. you've executed the concept in a homogenized way that truely holds the piece together in meaning, visual harmony, and textural unity.

all of my sculpture pieces that are reminiscent of this method are made of materials that are not so unified, and having seen this, it is a source of regret.

was there a lot of casting involved?

well this is not really metalwork (or not entirely)
here you can see the model before painting
used plastic, wood, metal...
I made it in my room along with all the other sculptures - so my room was a mess
