Description Michelle Belanger wrote in her book, Dictionary of Demons, a suggestion for the possible origin of the name:

"The name of this demon first appears in the Bible in 2 Kings, where he is described as being a false god worshipped by the Philistine people as the city of Ekron. Rabbinical texts interpreted the name to mean Lord of the Dunghill, and hence, Lord of the Flies. Ball-zebub, as it appears in the Bible, probably means "Prince Baal" but zebub is close enough in sound to zebul, meaning "to make dung", that it allowed the name to be twisted by those ancients opposed to the worship of this Middle Eastern deity."

There is further elaboration on Beelzebub as "Prince of Demons" or even "Satan's Right-Hand Man", an image people more commonly associate the name with these days, and how it wasn't established until the writing of the New Testament. After reading the segment it becomes increasingly important (Luke 11:14), it has occured to me the sort of heirarchal division among the demons was meant to suggest the inevitable downfall of the Devil's 'kingdom'.

"Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. If (the Devil) is divided against (itself), how can (its) kingdom stand?"
- Luke 11:17/18

Now, regarding this particular image, it probably doesn't come across to some as a surprise when I say I was heavily inspired by the print from Collin de Plany's Dictionnaire Infernal.

I have skimmed through on the sort of pieces people have put up on DA regarding the ol' Lord of Flies (it)self and I find an awful lot of them very humanoid in form, or at the most extreme the typical forked-tail figure with horns and pitchfork kind of look. Now, I'm not syaing all these suck because of that; there are some bloody good ones done that way. However, I feel that it's becoming incredibly overdone. In any case, I've been spending plenty of time trying to draw very human-looking beings, so I thought I'd take the time to some something that could potentially be more fun to draw. At first, I think I wasn't entirely sure if it turned out alright but looking at it again now, it's kind of grown on me. Trying to give the sense of it having a 'hairy' or 'fuzzy' body was certainly enjoyable.

I hope plenty of you find some appeal in this.
