Description One interesting feature about the Langenberg quarry is that it not only very well preserved three dimensional fossils of many vertebrates, especially a whole herd of Europasaurus holgeri, but also some tracks. Among these are some which are of greater interest for the whole understanding of this ecosystem: Theropod tracks, some longer than 45 cm, so definitely, not the dwarfed monsters you would expect on a island populated by sauropods rarely larger than a horse. But interestingly there are no Europasaurus remains above the (now mostly lost) layers which contained the theropod tracks.
The authors of a new paper about these footprints suggest therefore that we maybe have here the documents of an biologic invasion. It's possible that a new land bridge formed during the late Jurassic and connected the Langenberg habitat with an much bigger european island. The faunal exchange brought larger, maybe 8 meters long (hip height 1,8-1,9 m), potential megalosaurids, similar to Torvosaurus in reach of the small Europasaurs. The possible outcome is visible here.
Also interesting is the method the authors used, because the fossils are now part of the quarries product spectrum they were only able to work with photos made shortly before the blasting started. But thanks to modern techniques like Photogrammtery we can still analyse these lost rocks.

I was asked to produce some quick artwork for the press release of this fascinating paper and could hardly say no
here the open access paper by Jens N. Lallensack, P. Martin Sander, Nils Knötschke, and Oliver Wingspalaeo-electronica.org/content…
And here the (german so far) press article with my art: www3.uni-bonn.de/Pressemitteil…

P.s. The differences between male and female Europasaurus are pure speculation.

Nope, it's more based on Torvosaurus, I didn't know Wiehenvenator was worked on during that time... and Wiehenvenator is from the Middle Jurassic, this one
is a Late Jurassic torvosaur

I think these Theropods are way overpowered in this environment. I wonder how Europasaurus managed to survive here.

That's a coincidence

Kalia24 In reply to Hyrotrioskjan [2016-01-16 16:45:49 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps it's because of the head shape...
Btw - that comparison to the human silhouette is a really good thing there. I guess that like many other laymen in prehistoric subjects I think of most of the dinosaurs as giants (except for a few that are chicken-size and about human-size raptors) - and these are not much bigger than horses nowadays...

This special island has no name (yet) but you can find some papers about this when you search for the Langenberg quarry.

Is the theropod megalosaurus?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hyrotrioskjan In reply to FallenHallows [2015-10-12 01:09:04 +0000 UTC]

It's partly based on Megalosaurus and Torvosaurus.

Awesome work and congrats on it being published with the article

I really like the details you've put into it. The movement of the juvenile Europasaurus caught my attention: is it falling over or is it sort of running? The adults seem to move in another way.

Asuma17 [2015-06-20 03:03:07 +0000 UTC]

Why is it called a theropod? It's obviously a Torvosaurus.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Hyrotrioskjan In reply to Asuma17 [2015-06-24 22:07:52 +0000 UTC]

It's partly based on a Torvosaurus (how I said in the description) but it's not really this genus.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Asuma17 In reply to Hyrotrioskjan [2015-06-25 19:24:21 +0000 UTC]

So it's kinda like a cross between Eustreptospondylus then, where was this genus found anyway? If any chance it could be a Magnosaurus or better a Duriavenator.

Interesting theory. I like the work here. I'm curious as to the dynamics of the mysterious invader. This is quite a profound discovery, as it is another point to the fact that invasive species aren't only a human-caused factor in ecological degeneration. I wonder what would happen if some of those europasauri had developed new adaptations to combat the invasive theropods.... *speculative evolution time*

acepredator In reply to WorldBuildersInc [2015-06-21 22:32:47 +0000 UTC]

The difference here is that the mystery theropod crossed on its own, like the cattle egret. It wasn't assisted by a sapient species.
