Description You don't get to see a new titanosaur skull every day. These animals are extremely obscure in terms of their facial anatomy and every little piece of skull bone has a huge scientific value.
In the case of Sarmientosaurus the patagonian paleontologists were extremely lucky, they discovered a complete skull and a few cervical vertebra.
When working on skull-less titanosaurs we have now another reference to look at
This speculative reconstruction is based on the preserved skull but also taxa which are closely related to Sarmientosaurus, for example Malawisaurus and Tapuiasaurus.

The man standing next to this 12 m long beast is a Tehuelche, a member of a indigenous tribe which once roamed all Patagonia and is now
nearly exclusively found in the province Chubut, where Sarmientosaurus was uncovered.

Um are they sure it's 12 meters in length? From research on it today comparing to Tyrannosaurus and that of Saltasaurus and Allosaurus, I'd say it be a least 20-30ft long.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hyrotrioskjan In reply to Asuma17 [2016-05-14 19:26:04 +0000 UTC]

20-30ft would be even less... But it was indeed one meter too short. Changed that.

Asuma17 In reply to Hyrotrioskjan [2016-05-14 20:05:07 +0000 UTC]

So were saying it was 11 meters?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hyrotrioskjan In reply to Asuma17 [2016-05-15 01:21:34 +0000 UTC]

It's now 12 m long. Updated the pic, decreased the size of the human.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Asuma17 In reply to Hyrotrioskjan [2016-05-15 02:54:17 +0000 UTC]

I don't get it's still quite small if you ask me. The Paleontologists said the skull measured 43 centimeters now in meters that is exactly as it 0.43m. What I've converted is that Allosaurus has a head of 0.84 meters long; that is 4 times longer than Sarmientosaurus' skull. Allosaurus was estimated to be 26ft in length so unless it's because it is a Sauropod then something seems off.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hyrotrioskjan In reply to Asuma17 [2016-05-31 15:25:31 +0000 UTC]

0.84 is roughly two times more...

I don't know if you use the metric system on a regular basis but the skull on this drawing is even a little longer than 43 cm.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Asuma17 In reply to Hyrotrioskjan [2016-05-31 18:45:55 +0000 UTC]

I say that because of tradional math numerials. You know 4+4=8;2Γ—4=8? You know that stragety

Oh it is? Well normally I don't use the metric system much, but during that study I had thought of the conclusion that any dinosaur with a skull length of 40-80 cm is roughly around 20-30ft in length. But wasn't aware the skull is a bit longer...if that possibly the case with Sarmientosaurus then the skull would be at least a 1 meter (or so) long like T.Rex's.
