I absolutely love your work on both these tutorials as well as your Black Heaven Graphic Novel. You are an inspiration to me, and you have helped me improve my renders in just a few short weeks. I hope to see more of your Graphic Novel in the near future.Β

i know this is an old post, but im just getting into daz and have a 2 questions, first, has your technique changed since you posted this, do you still do it this way?.Β  second, to save rendering time does it effect the final quality to render the "lighting" image at slightly lower settings then the "uber" image, im curious because im rendering on an older phenom2 black edition (great for games, shit for rendering) and it takes me 2 hours to render a 3000by5000 pixel image without uber, with uber it takes about 4 hours, and if i can cut the "lighting" time down to an hour that would be awesome!.

IamUman In reply to 3DRComics [2014-10-20 08:49:18 +0000 UTC]

1. No, I don't use this technique anymore myself. I use this technique:Β Realistic lights in Daz Studio
2. Like you, I'm always looking for ways to cut rendertimes (actually, if it takes longer than 15 minutes, I just won't render it). So your suggestion to lower the settings to save rendering time sounds perfectly sensible to me. If the final result cuts it for you, then do whatever saves you time/energy.
I suggest you also lower the quality. 3000x5000 is very high and only necessary if you are going to use it for printing on large canvas. If you lower it to 720x1200 it will still be big enough to show it on Deviantart and the render will speed up from 4 hours to less than an 1 hour.

ok ill give that one a shot.

and I am probably wrong, but I always assumed that rendering at a higher resolution would give you more detail, even if you shrink the image down to a lower resolution after editing I always thought that it would have more detail then an image rendered at the lower resolution.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IamUman In reply to 3DRComics [2014-10-26 10:00:05 +0000 UTC]

Technically it makes no difference if you start at 3000 pixels and shrink to 1000 or if you start at 1000 pixels.
But if you start at 3000 and then begin to edit and add things in Photoshop, you will automatically have more eye for the details (since you can zoom in further) so the final result will indeed be more detailed.

This is only true if you do detailed Photoshop postwork and editing. If you only render in Daz or Poser it makes no difference at all and you should only render in higher resolutions if you need it for printing.Β

Thank you very much. I will have to see if it can be done with gimp or other free program!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IamUman In reply to MarinaIbiza [2013-01-27 13:32:02 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure that Gimp has the same sort of layer blending modes, but you can always download a 1 month working demo of Photoshop.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MarinaIbiza In reply to IamUman [2013-01-27 14:40:49 +0000 UTC]

Nuuuuu i cant, because if i learn it then i'd want to use it, and cant afford it..... and then i may be tempted by the dark side of the force and do things i can regret

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IamUman In reply to MarinaIbiza [2013-01-27 15:24:46 +0000 UTC]

LOL
I understand.
Maybe it's possible with GIMP. I know layers exist in GIMP but I don't know if the GIMP has the same blend modes... so you'll have to try it out.

Very nice and very clever way to get a great effect.
Anyone who thinks this technique is "cheating", doesn't really understand art, I guess.
I am going do some experimenting with this...
