Description This picture was done for Epilogue.net's Anti-Fantasy-Cliche contest. This is my anti-chainmail-biki half naked bimbettes with perfect hair blowing in the wind.

Real fighting women would have their hair tied back, not flying around everywhere. They would have real armor. Mothers would teach the arts of chivalry to their daughters, and great women-warrior leaders would have memorial statuary, and legacies for their daughters to live up to.

I really got into this thing with the mother-warrior as a stern, unyielding teacher. She's backed up by a stone tower, growing from a mountainside. She has died though her funeral memorial stands within a castle garden. A traditional knight's statue might lie upon the lid of his sarcophagus, instead she stands ready even in death.
The daughter is more yielding, beautiful like a rose, but with thorns. You can't see her face. She reaches out to touch her mother's effigy before riding off into battle. Behind her roses climb the castle walls.

There's also a horse, as for his anti-cliche, he's presented from a non-traditional point of view. heh.

I thought that when she leaned foreward her armor would gap in the back, but it looks very odd. That could have better put together. Also the statue of the mother should have been taller, by a head or two. Maybe next time.

A fantastic piece of work. The shading is perfect - it gives it a sense of dimension, but keeps the illustrative feel - almost like embossed leather. All of the detail and the choice of perspective - wow.

It's great to see your art outside of SWAG as well!

Definitely not cliche. I do appreciate it. I have a great fondness for big women and scrawny men. The armour is nice, and the expression on her face is fittingly solemn.
