Description The masterminds of the villains of Shadowlark Symphony: Zolem's followers.

Depicted are Zolem (aka Fenris, Loki, nasty McSharkface, etc.), Lady Orochi (the Dark Mother), Rogue Kharma (the Seed of Evil), Dante (the Cursed Monk), Lux Takram (the Dark Gear), Cyan (the Fell Blade, Yojimbo, Orochi's man-bitch), and Grendel (Shadowlord Grendel).

I decided to change Faust's name to Dante simply because A: there is already a 'Faust' family in the story - and Dante (the character from Dante's Inferno) made for a better name for the poor monk. Grendel's name may change for a number of reasons: back when I origionally was writing the story; I thought it was cool sounding, but the legendary monster he is named after doesn't share much in story terms with him.

Grendel's race are all named after mythological monsters: Baelrog, Jabberwok, Lucifer, Orochi (oops, spoiler), so Grendel seemed to fit. The problem is that they all basically fit the mythology of thier namesake.

I'm actually leaning more towards Mammon or perhaps Gilgamesh at this point (yeah yeah, Gilgamesh was an immortal, not a monster - but the whole Necrophobia thing actually fits).

EDIT: hmm; thought of another monster name I may have to use though it wouldnt fit with a villain: "Gort" (that would be the guardian Robot from The Day the Earth Stood Still... wonder if I would get in trouble for using that for a bodyguard; movie references are always harder to get away with than mythological ones).

My computer's been whack... anywaay, i noticed alot of your evil characters have some kind of scar or look like they have a psychotically mental problem.
I guess that's why they're evil!

Actually scars are rampant in SLS on good or bad side (Psyte and Sakura have scars that are visible, Eve has scars on her wrists from a suicide attempt, Graves has that massive scar on his chest) people have scars. :3

So... why were you thinking of Gilgamesh? HE was never a bad-guy/monster-thing, was he?

Icymasamune In reply to Aetherian [2007-04-03 23:03:57 +0000 UTC]

Well - Gilgamesh was the 'Hero' of his stories: but this is largely because he was a king: In most of the versions of the story he is depicted as kind of a jerk. As for being a monster, no - but being half-god/immortal I think is close enough to monster for my purposes.

I always like the name Grendel, as I did the name Calaban(sp?). I used to the name too for a wild card character that look good on the outside, but is monster-like in personality.

I see you put Wormwood in the shot too (the sea of eyes). Something I always wondered about when I was reading the comic the first time around (the Godslayer prologue) was: "Icy said that Wormwood like much like a storm rather than a thinking entity, but then why does it have eyes?" I'm not trying to rock the boat, I'm just you made it like that to easily ID it and so it can strike fear in people's hearts. But I'm think you could say that though it doesn't think it could run strictly on instinct.

well...hmmm - I suppose the best way to interpret the Shinasea (the sea of eyes) is that it is intent without motivation: it's like a computer program, it exists to serve a purpose, and it can behave in certain ways like it 'thinks' but it has no mind or personality; it's more like a force of nature, a zombie, a virus, etc.

Kokayi5 In reply to Icymasamune [2007-04-02 14:41:57 +0000 UTC]

And since it has no personality, it's subject to being controlled by others right? So it decides things for itself when not being controlled, but is at the mercy of it's master when under control, right?

Love the whole lot of em. Especially Zolem, Heh one day he is destined to 'Eat' The moon. I miss his scars though...

Grendel also draws the eye... heh with an expression like his and a shirt like that heh. Good luck on working on a name for him, that can really be a task at times.

At any rate, I don't know if you've checked out [link] yet, but you may find it helpful in finding Grendel an appropriate name.

Actually Lady Orochi is really pretty much the least evil of that bunch: she's just pissed Mikado and Oryu pretty much commited genocide on her race.

I agree most times. This is usually due to the fact that people try (often too hard) to have underdog main characters. Which is fine, but it backfires at times like this unless you have a nack to good guys with badass personalities or gear.

Shinasea = astral construct of the Gamorah (ancient Terran race) aspect of corruption and destruction. Think of it like a computer virus on the astral plane.

Wormwood = the artificial body intended to house the astral body of the Shinasea; was burried on the moon after the Illians sealed the Shinasea away.

Zolem = the name Mikado gave in his prophetic vision of a avatar for the Shinasea. A mortal who would be corrupted by the Shinasea and bring its purpose of total ahniliation of the Illians' work.

Fenris = title for the creature that would shatter the moon and release the body of the Shinasea (Wormwood). Many believe this to be the same individual as Zolem.

Also- the Shinasea itself has no real will or intelligence so to speak: it's like a force of nature. According to Mikado's writing; Zolem will give life and sentience to a fragment of the Shinasea and will use that fragment to construct an army to lay siege on the worlds of the Asylum.

Wormwood was burried? I though it'd be intanglible. Or do you me it's underground in a cave a sealed off with some magic spell?

Icymasamune In reply to Kokayi5 [2007-03-31 22:33:55 +0000 UTC]

well - the Shinasea is the ethereal power - wormwood is it's physical body: or rather what was supposed to be it's physical body.

nice array of bad guys there. I think Gilgamesh was only part immortal. Been a while sense I read the legend about him. But I know he died at the end of the myth that involved Enkidu. Still it is a cool idea to go with.

Yeah - I'll have to go back through the legfend before I finalize the decission on the name. It's a bit rough because all the other Lillem fit thier names so well: Orochi has a snake theme to her, Lucifer is a master of disguise, Baelrog is a soldier, Jabberwok gets decapitated, etc.

Well Giglamesh was selfish and prideful, as most ancient heroes where. Also he kinda like to kill things, and did go to hell and come back. Dunno there are tons of myths on the guy.

SirPreacher In reply to Kokayi5 [2007-03-26 17:24:46 +0000 UTC]

Ancient cultures were much different from ours. They had alot of bravado and different set of morals. Gilgamesh, Hercules, and Beowulf are all examples. They do heroic deeds, but have some major flaws. Hercules does all the trials, to make up for killing his wife and kids in a rage enduced by Hera. Gilgamech killed the Bull of Heaven to save his town, but killed the demon Umbaba for fun. Beowulf was a saxon hero that bragged of his prior deeds, though he did save ppl from Grendel.

Our modern day anti-hero is more like the legendary heroes of the past.

So the legendary or really old time heroes were more human than angels, huh. They did good, but like humans messed up now and then.

Sorta, but in alot of old legends gods could be killed, and there 1/2 god offspring too. No immortality, and at times very very human.

Yeah - the sadistic nature of Gilgamesh, and his legendary greed are kind of what point me towards using his name for the character, the big kickr was the Necrophobia: according the the mythology Gilgamesh died and saw a glimps of what was waiting for him, when he came back he was terrified of dying; this goes along with the fact that the charactr in question is one of the few villains that is aware of Graves, and is actually worried that he is trying to stop them (Graves is called 'the Angel of Death' in Mikado's writings - or more accurately 'the Shadowlark'; Ravens being a sort of symbol of death).
