The first time I heard Japanese I thought it was an idiotic sounding language. I got over it pretty fast though once I got into anime : P
Now I can't tell if I'm fascinated by the culture that produces it or turned off...

yeah you're right it's a totally different culture, i'm not shure i'll fit in. but just once I wish I could go there and see how it is
hahaha you're right girls in anime, it's too much and some of them are really annoying
favorite shows/ movie, it's hard to say I love many. I love Miyazaki's film of 'course^^ -tim burton', Labyrinth, 300, Gladiator, Braveheart, Robin hood, Harry Potter, Narnia...
hahaha too hard to chose. I love action/ fantasy/ dramatic in general
shows: i love Big Bang theory, that's 70 show, Dr House, How I met yout mother, Kaamelott (it's french)and more and more and the anime ^^(Bleach, Fairy Tail, GTO, Nicky Larson...)
and you what do you like?

Yeah. Go for it ^^
I'm thinking about backpacking through one of the continents after college, and if I choose Asia, I'll definitely try to make room for a pitstop in Japan. I bet getting around as a hitchhiker there would be tough though...
As for me? I'm the biggest sucker for fantasy in general
Naturally, all things Ghibli will always have a special place in my heart. As for live action movies, I really like the hard hitters, like Dead Poets Society, Shawshank Redemption, and Schindler's list. I know that's an odd lineup, it's just that most movies in general just feel like they come right off of an assembly line. So, even though I loved watching Avatar, it just didn't really move me like some of the more serious (and sometimes darker ) movies.
As for shows, I actually don't watch a lot of sit coms and comedy shows just because I basically lived through one over my gap year before college
But once in a while I'll sit down with some friends to some good old Big Bang Theory, How I met your mother, and Arrested Development.
I've actually been watching lots of anime shows this last year and a half, so I've gotten one hell of a list compiled
I've tried to stay away from the giants like naruto and bleach, in part because my life will go to hell if I get hooked on a show that's hundreds of episodes, : P but I'm really loving Fairy Tale. Speaking of which, there's a new episode today
It's hard to say what my favorite anime shows are, since I've seen at least a dozen now, and I usually choose really carefully which ones I like to watch, but some examples would be the classics: Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Outlaw star

Oh yeah, I didn't realize, you are pretty new! Welcome to deviantART! I sent you a "note." I'm not sure how you will receive it, but I hope it works. I don't really like my voice either, but I still like singing, which seems like you, so sing away
As for what I can do, I can assure you I'm just as flawed as anybody else. No illusions there, I was just naturally talented for music, even though I never asked to be.
I took French two years in middle school... I speak portuguese as well as english, so it was easy to learn, but speaking french made my mouth feel sore
READ LES MIS!!! It's the only book that has ever made me cry. Just... the most beautiful piece of literature ever T_T
Dune! Kicks the SHIT out of the movie. Might just be the greatest sci fi world ever conceived in literature. And I'm not the only one who thinks that. The author had to make a public notice telling people not to form a cult revolving his literature.
AND CANDIDE! It doesn't matter if that's for school. It's awesome XD Voltaire is the man. He and Ralph Waldo Emerson were my favorite modern thinkers in high school.
So... there's things we got to do! PICK UP THAT GUITAR!!! And happy hunting
Let me know if there's a genre of anime you'd prefer to start out with, and I'll help you sort out my list

Weeelll.... If you read Dune and like it half as much as I did, you might see why people wanted to start a cult not that I was one of them.
Secondaires for you is middle school and high school for us. Superior school is college or university for us. And your english is very good. It's much more extensive than that tiny bit that's left of my French. I loved Candide. The fact that it is relevant and funny even today is remarkable. And don't worry about being uncultured. Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American thinker who helped found an American school of thought called Transcendentalism. You should check him out anyway, because most of what he talked about had everything to do with being a morally strong individual. For young adults it can be particularly inspiring, like it was for me
Cool that you want to be a teacher I can be good with kids, it's just so tiring that I can't sustain myself for very long. Even so, I've worked at summer camp for several years because it was so much fun ^^
Now, if you want to start off with action anime shows and movies, here's the run down. Even though this narrows things down a little, you'll probably still have a hard time choosing ^^
For awesome gun fight action, watch Trigun.
For brawls, unique martial arts, guns, and gunship action, watch Cowboy Bebop.
For outstanding sword fighting awesomeness, watch Samurai Champloo or Samurai 7. You'll probably also love Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit.
For sort of magic based and hand to hand martial art action, watch Avatar the last Airbender hands down, or try Fullmetal Alchemist. Utawarerumono too. And Kaze no Stigma.
For Mecha and large scale battles on earth with some gunfights and other cool stuff, watch Code Geass (this one is one of my favorites for a reason) and Fullmetal Panic!
For awesome space battles watch Macross Frontier. Maybe also Outlaw Star.
As for movies, Sword of the Stranger is one of the best anime action films. You might also want to look into Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal. Be warned though, these two are pretty gruesome.
Appleseed is sci fi ish with gunfights and small mechs.
And then there's Akira, one of the most famous anime movies of all time. Try it out.
For steampunk airbased dogfighting, Last Exile is the show for you.

Yeah I didn't get your note reply but at least mine worked fine
And no problem about the help. DeviantART is seriously one of the nicest, most respectful online communities I've ever seen, and the only one I've ever signed up to be in. So I might as well play along right? And if you read my latest journal entry, you'd know that I messed up my current term project by getting sick for a week. So I have an unbearable amount of free time until February, so it really wasn't much trouble coming up with the list. Don't sweat it ^^
That's cool that you are going to be teaching at the end of the month. I lived in Israel for a year, and for a couple weeks I taught kids english. It was really hard, because they didn't know any english at all, but since I was teaching with a friend, we had an absolute blast ^^ We discovered that if we taught the kids how to speak in funny American accents they remembered their worlds better
And you should check Ralph Waldo Emerson out. I don't know if he has been translated to French, because his english might be tough for you to decipher. In any case, one of his most famous essays, and the one that I identified with the most was his essay Self Reliance.
As for your first show, excellent choices! Code Geass is one of my three main favorites. It's really intense. It's literally like a good thriller novel. You just have to know what happens next. The execution of the story is totally gripping, and the power that distinguishes the main character is pretty unique too. Plus it's got some of the coolest battles and wars in any anime. Between the two seasons there's 50 episodes, so it's not too long, but it's short enough to make you wish for more too
Samurai Champloo I personally didn't find nearly as gripping or interesting, but it has some great humor, art, and sword fights.
Enjoy! Let me know your first impressions ^^ I always envy people who are watching my favorite shows or reading my favorite books for the first time because they don't know what's coming
And what is the hour difference between here and Belgium... funny, in another time line, I might have been born there. My mom was offered a job to dance Ballet there when she was younger, but my mom and dad decided against it after much thought : /

Yeah your note workerd, I must have done something wrong
Ah I've jusy read you journal, so bad for your sickness... what was your project? Oh I see now that you've got the time That Grandia game seems awesome as you descrid it. I wish I could live a real adventure too I think I'm a little crazy, but it's true sometimes I wish I could fall into an other world, with magic and fight, something epic I'm a dreamer
haha I do believe you for learning by making fun with accent. I always better remember things when I can remind something special (accent, laugh, anecdote...). And it's a shame but as many I remember insults
Really in IsrΓ«l? waw impressive. I never took the plane so I've never left Europe. I hope I'll do it one day
I'll try sometimes to find Self reliance in french or in english (I 'll use the dictionnary ).
Code Geass really looks great I'll start with this one and as you said 50 episodes, it's not too much
Sure I'll let you know my first impressions It's great to share Yeah it's funny to know the end when the others don't. from time to time I'm so impatient that I ask the end, when suspens is unbearable It's hard not to cheat and wait x)
I think the hour difference is 6 hours. but I'm not sure, here in Belgium we re the 19/01/2011 and it's 19h13 now. is that possible?
really you might have been born in Belgium that's crazy Life is really strange sometimes
