I remember first watching Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind my freshman year of high school and being completely enraptured by it ^^

Unfortunately, it was airing on tv and I caught it late, so I had no idea what the title was. A couple years later I heard the name, looked it up on a hunch and was rewarded with the realization that this was the movie that got the studio that made Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke off the ground. I went ballistic, watched all the movies over a year's time, and now I'm depressed that Ghibli doesn't pump out a new movie every week But Arriety looks interesting. I don't think Joe Hisaishi composed the music this time around, so it should be a pretty new experience ^^

The first time I heard Japanese I thought it was an idiotic sounding language. I got over it pretty fast though once I got into anime : P

Now I can't tell if I'm fascinated by the culture that produces it or turned off...

Hihi you right with anime you don't have choice i like the way it sound except for the voice of girl when it's too hide, that sonds stupid ^^
hihi me, I'm fascinated I wish I could go to Japan

dcbernman In reply to Idontwannamissathing [2011-01-16 19:43:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, especially because the culture just seems so bizarre and different, that's the real hook

It's just that I get to wondering about how gender roles and understanding of the real world as portrayed in Anime are affected by the culture there... even though it seems like such an interesting place, I get the feeling I'd just feel really, really out of place there :/

But then that would be an adventure in and of itself now wouldn't it?

And yes, high pitch anime girl voices are terrible! I just don't get how that's supposed to be appealing. I mean, often, those sorts of characters are supposed to be effeminately exaggerated, but to me, it's overdone to the point where I'm just ticked off. Oh well. Guess that's just part of their culture and trade.

What are your favorite shows/movies?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Idontwannamissathing In reply to dcbernman [2011-01-16 20:31:21 +0000 UTC]

yeah you're right it's a totally different culture, i'm not shure i'll fit in. but just once I wish I could go there and see how it is

hahaha you're right girls in anime, it's too much and some of them are really annoying

favorite shows/ movie, it's hard to say I love many. I love Miyazaki's film of 'course^^ -tim burton', Labyrinth, 300, Gladiator, Braveheart, Robin hood, Harry Potter, Narnia...
hahaha too hard to chose. I love action/ fantasy/ dramatic in general

shows: i love Big Bang theory, that's 70 show, Dr House, How I met yout mother, Kaamelott (it's french)and more and more and the anime ^^(Bleach, Fairy Tail, GTO, Nicky Larson...)

and you what do you like?

dcbernman In reply to Idontwannamissathing [2011-01-17 12:58:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. Go for it ^^
I'm thinking about backpacking through one of the continents after college, and if I choose Asia, I'll definitely try to make room for a pitstop in Japan. I bet getting around as a hitchhiker there would be tough though...

As for me? I'm the biggest sucker for fantasy in general
Naturally, all things Ghibli will always have a special place in my heart. As for live action movies, I really like the hard hitters, like Dead Poets Society, Shawshank Redemption, and Schindler's list. I know that's an odd lineup, it's just that most movies in general just feel like they come right off of an assembly line. So, even though I loved watching Avatar, it just didn't really move me like some of the more serious (and sometimes darker ) movies.

As for shows, I actually don't watch a lot of sit coms and comedy shows just because I basically lived through one over my gap year before college

But once in a while I'll sit down with some friends to some good old Big Bang Theory, How I met your mother, and Arrested Development.
I've actually been watching lots of anime shows this last year and a half, so I've gotten one hell of a list compiled
I've tried to stay away from the giants like naruto and bleach, in part because my life will go to hell if I get hooked on a show that's hundreds of episodes, : P but I'm really loving Fairy Tale. Speaking of which, there's a new episode today

It's hard to say what my favorite anime shows are, since I've seen at least a dozen now, and I usually choose really carefully which ones I like to watch, but some examples would be the classics: Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Outlaw star

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Idontwannamissathing In reply to dcbernman [2011-01-18 16:03:10 +0000 UTC]

oh Dead poets society and Schindler' list are awesome, I love it too there are so fascinating and deeply moving I remember I cryed a lot when I saw those, I was really in the story. but I don't think I've seen The Shawshank Redemption...
I liked Avatar too but for the special effects rather than the story. I agree with you it wasn't moving, poignant enough.

ahah really a life like a show ? interesting

yeah Big Band and HIMYM are always fun but I don't know Arrested development at all

ah you're damn right anime is taking so much time and Fairy tail is so great
that's funny, a friend of mine have just told me about Trigun few days ago! unfortunatly for now I've only watch the first episod but it seems nice. And I don't think I know the others ... shame on me

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dcbernman In reply to Idontwannamissathing [2011-01-18 19:37:46 +0000 UTC]

No worries. I would give you a list if you want it, it's just that it would be kinda long... I'd say I've seen about 30 shows now (holy crap I only just counted, that's a lot O_o)Then again, I never got into the mega big shows with ludicrous amounts of episodes... rest assured that at least I've got good taste though so let me know if you want some reliable recommendations. As it is though, I'm kinda running outa steam for my anime craze which only makes sense after seeing so much in only two years. Thinking about starting my own webcomic though, it's been a while since I've put my own ideas on paper. That, and I should probably get back to reading and practicing music >< I've been so unproductive lately. No amount of entertainment can compensate for that :/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Idontwannamissathing In reply to dcbernman [2011-01-18 20:05:03 +0000 UTC]

waw 30 that's a lot indeed. but yeah I'm interessted by your list I think that we've got some taste in common, so I trust your choices, I'm sure they're good

waw your own wabcomic that's so cool I wish I could do that but i'm not talented and inspired enough

oh reading I love it so much it's too bad I don't have more time to do it.
You're a muscican? that's so great? what are you doing?
You're lucky I wish I could play guitar but unfortunatly I've never learned. I'm always singing but so bad that it always rains ^^ anyway I can't picture my life without books or music

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dcbernman In reply to Idontwannamissathing [2011-01-18 21:32:54 +0000 UTC]

lol. I used to be a pretty serious pianist for ten years or so. I lost my spark for personal reasons two years ago though... in that time I just picked up the guitar, and I've been messing around ever since. Seriously though, if you want to play guitar just go for it You must have friends that can help you with basics right? And it's such a pleasantly simple instrument to learn (though not to master) that really almost anyone can play! DO IT! Don't sit on your hands, you will ALWAYS regret it. Even my sister got with the program and bought a guitar after seeing how I managed to pick it up.

That's great you love to sing! It's a good form of literal release you know? I enjoy it too, but I'm so self conscious about my voice when other people are around that most people don't know. I sang over my gap year, and somehow, everyone liked it so much they wouldn't leave me alone -.- so in that case I just got sick of people asking me to play and sing. But it was pretty flattering at first

I'm excited about my webcomic and the fact that I have the potential to become a decent artist, but it's the work I put into it that will determine the outcome... which I'm really nervous about because I'm infamously lazy as all my friends joke about with me.

I haven't really finished many books in a while...
But the last things I read were awesome ^^ I read Les Miserables and the entire Dune series over a two month period at the end of high school it was the best

As for an anime list, I think I'll just send you a message (can you do that on deviantART? guess I'll find out) I was really happy recently because I found a new one that I really liked, but one of the staff members was involved in a drug scandal and so there was never a second season few things depress me more than an unfinished story. Hopefully my webcomic will never suffer that fate

Idontwannamissathing In reply to dcbernman [2011-01-18 22:22:56 +0000 UTC]

waw piano, guitar and singing! Impressive is there a thing you can't do ?
Yeah you're right I should learn to play guitar or I'll regret it
I don't like my voice but I just can't listen to something without singing It must be hard for the others, they don't ask me to sing contrary to you

ahaha I'm sure that if you really want your webcomic to work you won't be lazy You'll enjoy it and work on it, it will be fun Hope that your webcomic won't suffer such a sad fate ^^

you're so right I hate unifinished story that's horrible not to know what could have happen.
Oh Les MisΓ©rables, I haven't read the book but I've seen the movie It's a shame because I'm Belgian and I speak french... Victor Hugo and that book are classics. I realy should read it some day.
Dune I remember seeing the film when I was little and I was so intrigued. I promised myself to read it one day but I still haven't did. I think I'm gonna make a "Things I should do" list
Right now I'm reading three books in the same time : the third book of "Le clan des Otori" (Tales of the Otori in english I think) I like it pretty much. I'm also reading Narnia in english this time. And I'm rereading "Candide"(Voltaire), but it's for school
If only we had more than 24 hours in a day

for the anime list I don't know where you can leave message in deviantArt. I'm must confess that I'm not habituated to the site yet

Oh yeah, I didn't realize, you are pretty new! Welcome to deviantART! I sent you a "note." I'm not sure how you will receive it, but I hope it works. I don't really like my voice either, but I still like singing, which seems like you, so sing away
As for what I can do, I can assure you I'm just as flawed as anybody else. No illusions there, I was just naturally talented for music, even though I never asked to be.

I took French two years in middle school... I speak portuguese as well as english, so it was easy to learn, but speaking french made my mouth feel sore

READ LES MIS!!! It's the only book that has ever made me cry. Just... the most beautiful piece of literature ever T_T

Dune! Kicks the SHIT out of the movie. Might just be the greatest sci fi world ever conceived in literature. And I'm not the only one who thinks that. The author had to make a public notice telling people not to form a cult revolving his literature.

AND CANDIDE! It doesn't matter if that's for school. It's awesome XD Voltaire is the man. He and Ralph Waldo Emerson were my favorite modern thinkers in high school.

So... there's things we got to do! PICK UP THAT GUITAR!!! And happy hunting
Let me know if there's a genre of anime you'd prefer to start out with, and I'll help you sort out my list

Thanks for the welcome ^^

Yeah i find your note I'm answering you there too lol

waw and you remember french? Me I've learned english at school for six years during High school (I think that's how you called what we called "secondaires" for child from 12 to 18)... but as you see my english is really no perfect. I've also learn German and Dutch but it's a shame I've nearly forgeted all

Dune :"The author had to make a public notice telling people not to form a cult revolving his literature" haha gosh that is so great, people are crazy

oh you like Candide? I do like classical french litterature too. it's what I'm partly studiing. I'm in Superior school (I think it's College for you...) to be a french teacher
but I'm so uncultivated I had never read Ralph Waldo Emerson

Promise I ll try to play

for the anime I think I wanna start with some action(fight, martial art something like that) yeah yeah I'm a girl but not really girlish I like fight and specially Martial Art 'cause I've done judo

dcbernman In reply to Idontwannamissathing [2011-01-19 14:04:07 +0000 UTC]

Weeelll.... If you read Dune and like it half as much as I did, you might see why people wanted to start a cult not that I was one of them.

Secondaires for you is middle school and high school for us. Superior school is college or university for us. And your english is very good. It's much more extensive than that tiny bit that's left of my French. I loved Candide. The fact that it is relevant and funny even today is remarkable. And don't worry about being uncultured. Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American thinker who helped found an American school of thought called Transcendentalism. You should check him out anyway, because most of what he talked about had everything to do with being a morally strong individual. For young adults it can be particularly inspiring, like it was for me

Cool that you want to be a teacher I can be good with kids, it's just so tiring that I can't sustain myself for very long. Even so, I've worked at summer camp for several years because it was so much fun ^^

Now, if you want to start off with action anime shows and movies, here's the run down. Even though this narrows things down a little, you'll probably still have a hard time choosing ^^

For awesome gun fight action, watch Trigun.

For brawls, unique martial arts, guns, and gunship action, watch Cowboy Bebop.

For outstanding sword fighting awesomeness, watch Samurai Champloo or Samurai 7. You'll probably also love Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit.

For sort of magic based and hand to hand martial art action, watch Avatar the last Airbender hands down, or try Fullmetal Alchemist. Utawarerumono too. And Kaze no Stigma.

For Mecha and large scale battles on earth with some gunfights and other cool stuff, watch Code Geass (this one is one of my favorites for a reason) and Fullmetal Panic!

For awesome space battles watch Macross Frontier. Maybe also Outlaw Star.

As for movies, Sword of the Stranger is one of the best anime action films. You might also want to look into Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal. Be warned though, these two are pretty gruesome.

Appleseed is sci fi ish with gunfights and small mechs.

And then there's Akira, one of the most famous anime movies of all time. Try it out.
For steampunk airbased dogfighting, Last Exile is the show for you.

Sorry I answerd your note yesterday but I think it didn't work :s

Thanks a lot for helping me out Everything looks awesome.

I've seen al Avatar (I've got them all) that's really great I 've also seen the movie (and you?) but I was kind of disapointed. I think the anime is so much better and I don't know I didn't like it. maybe I need time to forget the anime and then see the movie again. For me, it's often like that for movies adaptations
And I'm reading Fullmetal Alchemist

Thanks for my english ^^ I've been learning english since I'm 10 but I think that french is hard too learn, there's a lot of rules and exceptions. It's not easy even when it's your mother language Yeah teaching is really cool but so tiring you're right anyway I just love it. We've got a few weeks as probationary teacher during the year. I'm going to teach french and religion at the end of the mounth and I'm looking so forward to do it. It's really nice. It's rather a passion than a work for me And Candide is really interesting even today you'right. classical literature is so important and sitll have a lot to give today
I've been looking a little on the intenet for Ralph Waldo Emerson and it really seems interesting

haha I'm looking at the list and it's hard to choose I think I'll start with samurai champloo and code geass and the movies looks great too I'll start watching that tonight (there must be a huge jet lag between you and me)

Again thanks a lot for the list It must have taken a long time to do, sorry :s It's too sweet

Yeah I didn't get your note reply but at least mine worked fine
And no problem about the help. DeviantART is seriously one of the nicest, most respectful online communities I've ever seen, and the only one I've ever signed up to be in. So I might as well play along right? And if you read my latest journal entry, you'd know that I messed up my current term project by getting sick for a week. So I have an unbearable amount of free time until February, so it really wasn't much trouble coming up with the list. Don't sweat it ^^

That's cool that you are going to be teaching at the end of the month. I lived in Israel for a year, and for a couple weeks I taught kids english. It was really hard, because they didn't know any english at all, but since I was teaching with a friend, we had an absolute blast ^^ We discovered that if we taught the kids how to speak in funny American accents they remembered their worlds better

And you should check Ralph Waldo Emerson out. I don't know if he has been translated to French, because his english might be tough for you to decipher. In any case, one of his most famous essays, and the one that I identified with the most was his essay Self Reliance.

As for your first show, excellent choices! Code Geass is one of my three main favorites. It's really intense. It's literally like a good thriller novel. You just have to know what happens next. The execution of the story is totally gripping, and the power that distinguishes the main character is pretty unique too. Plus it's got some of the coolest battles and wars in any anime. Between the two seasons there's 50 episodes, so it's not too long, but it's short enough to make you wish for more too

Samurai Champloo I personally didn't find nearly as gripping or interesting, but it has some great humor, art, and sword fights.

Enjoy! Let me know your first impressions ^^ I always envy people who are watching my favorite shows or reading my favorite books for the first time because they don't know what's coming

And what is the hour difference between here and Belgium... funny, in another time line, I might have been born there. My mom was offered a job to dance Ballet there when she was younger, but my mom and dad decided against it after much thought : /

Yeah your note workerd, I must have done something wrong
Ah I've jusy read you journal, so bad for your sickness... what was your project? Oh I see now that you've got the time That Grandia game seems awesome as you descrid it. I wish I could live a real adventure too I think I'm a little crazy, but it's true sometimes I wish I could fall into an other world, with magic and fight, something epic I'm a dreamer

haha I do believe you for learning by making fun with accent. I always better remember things when I can remind something special (accent, laugh, anecdote...). And it's a shame but as many I remember insults
Really in IsrΓ«l? waw impressive. I never took the plane so I've never left Europe. I hope I'll do it one day

I'll try sometimes to find Self reliance in french or in english (I 'll use the dictionnary ).
Code Geass really looks great I'll start with this one and as you said 50 episodes, it's not too much
Sure I'll let you know my first impressions It's great to share Yeah it's funny to know the end when the others don't. from time to time I'm so impatient that I ask the end, when suspens is unbearable It's hard not to cheat and wait x)

I think the hour difference is 6 hours. but I'm not sure, here in Belgium we re the 19/01/2011 and it's 19h13 now. is that possible?

really you might have been born in Belgium that's crazy Life is really strange sometimes

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dcbernman In reply to Idontwannamissathing [2011-01-19 19:38:59 +0000 UTC]

Yeah so it's about a six hour difference. Not too bad.
My main project idea was to do medieval sword fighting, but something went wrong and I couldn't go. I was going to do Aikido at my school as a backup, but when I got sick, I missed too many lessons. Didn't like my first few classes so much anyways though.

As for Grandia yeah it's great! I've been playing alot of the great games of the super nintendo, ps1, n64 and dreamcast over these last two years. Grandia was awesome

Europe is so relatively small that even with out flying I'm sure you've done some traveling, right? I've always been moving around. I've lived in seven places total now, and I love traveling. I'm not very wealthy, so I have to work pretty hard to make the money for plane tickets now that I'm living away in college, but it's always worth it

Can't wait to see what you think of code Geass I've seen it two and a half times now ^^

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Idontwannamissathing In reply to dcbernman [2011-01-19 21:24:59 +0000 UTC]

yeah 6 hours is not really too much Still it's odd thinking that we're talking with six hours of difference and gosh I don't know how many kilometers

Medieval sword fighting really? One of my dream is to do that (i'm not sure i'd be able to hold a sword though)! I love the medieval period a lot. I love going to medieval fairs.
I never done Aikido, i was more attracted by judo. I just love it. I was going to pass the brown belt but sadly I had to stop because of my studies, I didn't have the time anymore. I miss it a lot.

you're right Europe is kinda small. And I've make some traveling. I went to France several times, two times in Italy, few times to the Netherland.
euh I've also been in Austria.
I've been several times in the United Kingdom (Ireland, Walles, England ( I worked there a mounth) and Scotland) ) I had the chance to go to the United Kingdom since i'm little I think that's why I love so much English ^^
I also often go to Germany because I've got family there

waw in 7 places that's awesome! Where have you been? It sure worth it you lucky

oh as soon as I've watch code Geass I'll tell you, I wanted to start today but I was drawing and I want to finish I think that when it'll be done it'll be too late to be concentred on something x) Tomorrow I will
