Description Modeled Spike for future projects. Decided to have some fun with it and get some practice in with character expressions. The model is not rigged yet, each of the poses were sculpted. Programs used: 3ds Max and ZBrush

People have brought this up before so I guess I'll explain. The thing is once you release something to the internet you can't really un-release it so that scares me a bit. They may not be my characters but they are my models and they set my artwork apart from most of the other 3D MLP art. I have released much less artwork than I really wanted to over the lifetime of the MLP fandom but I still have plans for MLP art and I still want it to remain unique.

I want to build a name for myself as an artist and after seeing what happened to the SFM models I don't think releasing my models will help that goal. Not many people know or care what the original source of the SFM models was (I think it was KP but I'm not 100% sure) and after I saw people posting them to SuperFanArt claiming them as their own and potentially making money off of them it kind of put me off the whole idea. Also I would feel a little weird seeing my models applied so some of the stuff that gets made in SFM.

I know 3D art is great for the ability to share and reuse things but I am under no obligation to share my work, even if it is "just" fanart. My pony artwork helped get me featured in a Disney comic so there are real life career goals involved.

Additionally, my models are not rigged (I usually sculpt each pose individually as I did here) so I would have to rig them and import them into SFM and it's just not really a priority for me either way.

I hope that's a satisfactory enough answer.

Edit - just to be clear I'm not annoyed at the suggestion - I like that people like my models enough to want to use them - I just wanted to provide a detailed explanation.

To me it's a shame that more people don't take a shot at making their own. People have made some really beautiful animations in SFM that must've taken a huge amount of effort so it's weird to me that they wouldn't also make their own models. It's not easy yeah but once you do it you have it forever.

I guess that's a testament to how well put-together SFM is. I haven't used it but it must be pretty intuitive if people can use it with relatively little 3D knowledge.

This is further proof of why we need to see more pony art done with professional 3dΒ software.Β I wanna find the morons who said that 3d doesn't go well with MLP!

This looks really good. This is one of the few 3D models of a character I've seen that still retains the cartoony expression without looking weird.

This HAS to get rigged!!

Looks to me like you're the savior that can finally release us from the opression of the current SFM ponies!
Given that you choose to, of course.

(Your models just look so much nicer~.)

I'd actually appreciate pony models in the style of this, even tho Spike is a model he really amazingly resembles his 2D counterpart near perfectly! Not to speak of the SFM model...

"each of the poses were sculpted" oh god, now thatΒ΄s a bunch of work (although could get handy when working with blendshapes lateron)

What did you use 3ds Max for? The render and lighting?

The model is amazing!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

IG-64 In reply to Ikarooz [2016-01-28 02:04:26 +0000 UTC]

I did some retopo work in 3ds Max since I'm not a big fan of ZBrush's retopo tools, but otherwise yes I mostly used 3ds Max for lighting and rendering. I actually found it easier to sculpt each one since I'm not great with rigging.

Ikarooz In reply to IG-64 [2016-01-28 08:17:23 +0000 UTC]

take your time and learn it, itΒ΄s SO worth it :>

Huh, you can also do retopo in 3ds Max, didnΒ΄t know that

Look up the Step Build tool in 3ds Max, it's fantastic for retopology.
