I downloaded a random larger image of the planet from the internet,i then used a small portion of it,the upper right one is an astronomical picture of the sun and I changed some appearance factors to better fit in the "painting".
I combined drawing,my 3D models and layer mixing a lot...

Oh I see, thanks! I asked because I was always baffled at how people got such highly detailed images for close up planets. What 3D software do you use?

As for the planet,the real masters of painting actually have their ways to create their own planets,they combine other real-life photos,satelite imagery,mixing with various brushes,freehand painting,etc...but I am no way near that level of skill so I used what I managed to find,so I cant have the actual credit for the planet itself,If I knew who made it I would post a link of the author to thank him...

I used Zbrush for 3D (2 jets lower left).

I was curious about making detailed planets as well; then I found a tutorial and can make my own [link]
In that description is some more information like what my texture looked like and where the tutorial is.
