Description

Developed during the infamous Thrawn Campaign as part of the Republic Star Fleet's New Class Modernization Program, the Y-wing Advanced went through two revisions of its design until its R&D team produced a functional prototype that exceeded the standards set by Rogue Squadron. Combining the Ion weapons and ordnance of Project Vampire and the drive system of Project Valkyrie, the Y-wing Advanced mk III outclasses the venerable but outdated BTL Y-wing in firepower and speed, though test pilots often insisted that the original is far more reliable. That being said, the SLAM-enabled drives are universally praised as a major upgrade.

Superior performance comes at superior cost, however, and the Republic ultimately discontinued mass production shortly after the end of the war. Only three hundred Mk IIIs were built, most of which had been dismantled in recycling plants.

I wish there was a 3d model of this. I'm gonna play Hans Zimmer's "Supermarine" and continue to observe it.

Very nice.  I especially like how you kept the design symetrical.  A lot of the ships in Star Wars would not be able to fly in real life.

Excellent, with a little bit of softening it would make a child safe toy. I can only hope they redo the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy and use it there...

The really bad part is this is a whole lot better than what has been in the new movies.

I really like this redesign and only have one negative comment about it.  Why is there no spot for an astromech Droid?!

IgnusDei In reply to FactionParadox [2019-08-29 04:19:39 +0000 UTC]

I couldn't find out precisely how wide an astromech droid is, so I didn't bother creating a slot.

That being said, that grey panel behind the cockpit is removable, and looks just big enough for an astromech to fit in.

FactionParadox In reply to IgnusDei [2019-08-29 08:01:09 +0000 UTC]

OK. I just wondered.  Thank you.  Since the original Star Wars I liked how they used those droids as navigators which would allow the fighters (Y-wings, X-wings, etc.) to not need to install a complete computer system or upgrades all the time. a fighter that was pieced together by spare parts would need an onboard computer but a lack of resources meant that each and every fighter could not be fitted with needed computer controls and the solution was just plug in an Astromech to do the job as these droids have the ability to be used as nav computer and flight control, bypassing power to various systems such as shields when needed.  They could fly the ships themselves if needed, for example if the pilot gets knocked unconscious the droid can fly fighter back to a safe landing to save the pilot and what is left of the fighter.  It seemed like a genius way to resolve lack of proper flight computers.

For that matter, you could just develop a standard bus to allow using droid brains as a built-in flight computer and avoid lots of wasted volume. There's a reason the flight engineer position on older aircraft have been totally replaced by computers and automation.

FactionParadox In reply to HaraSurya [2020-02-27 11:17:15 +0000 UTC]

Like modern aviation I would see that the X-wings and Y-wings in SW each needed an Astromech for flight engineering (which must take an enormous amount of processing power for star charts, flight positions in real time in three axis mathematics and store much of the flight data and logs and stellar maps for many systems) while the much newer A-wings and in particular the B-wings did not have a need for an astromech.  Something I noticed in the original movies.  Even in the new Episodes 7, 8 and 9 the newer X-wings STILL needed an astromech despite being some 30 years further in the future after the Battle of Endor.  Instead of using flesh pilots or astromechs, the Empire used disembodied humanoid brains.  Seems an advanced new astromech would be easier to use as it could also pilot the ships itself.

HaraSurya In reply to FactionParadox [2020-02-27 15:23:53 +0000 UTC]

Which raises the question if droid brain can fly, why not fight too and leave the humanoid pilot out of it.

Unfortunately, Star Wars technology (and plots) is based on the Rule of Cool and not actual logic.

One thing I LOVE about Star Wars is despite being set A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, it has amazing tech but best of all no "smartphones".  People actually talk to each other and are not glued to a screen with their head looking down all the time.  Humankind's posture is going to Hell and will be complete within another ten or fifteen years.  All the kids who grow up will have their heads locked in a downward looking position.  Tech is affecting human evolution and development.

HaraSurya In reply to FactionParadox [2020-02-27 21:23:24 +0000 UTC]

People read paperback books with the same posture.

I'm sure a historian could get into ancient technology and occupations where similar postures were required for long periods, but I'd imagine lots of painters of detailed objects did it (and do it to this day).

No, the interesting thing is people are forgetting how to remember information in favor of how to recall the source of that information.

The original Y-wing was envisioned by Lucas as the starfighter equivilent of a stripped-down hotrot, so appropriately this has the vibe of a modern 'legacy' muscle-car. Magnificent!

I like the look, it resembles the angular plate look from Homeworld with other details resembling other franchises i like.

The gun outlets at the wing roots remind me of Wing Commander Prophesy with the F-109 Vampire on the cover.

On the other side, the flat engines are typical for Mass Effect ships.

No AstroMech Droid? I´m missing the docking port behind the cockpit, so i assume you left it out intentionally as it´s also not mentioned in the list.

*Sees you mentioning the F-109 Vampire* Ah, I see you are a man of culture as well.

Initially, I was going to make an F-109 with elongated nacelles, but I ultimately decided to go with a different fuselage. I did kinda keep the wings, though, and the gun outlets. Good eye!
