The Raven Guard was traditionally acompanied by the Therion Cohort which wore, I believe, a bit more fancy uniforms (at least the high officers did). Maybe the Mordian Iron Guard would be a good inspiration with even more like 19th century look. But damn, I couldn't find any official pictures of those men so who really knows? This guy, although good fitting to the Raven Guard general doctrine looks a bit too modern for the 31st millenium (how ironic, hehe). If the Raven guard still held some auxiliae in 41st, then I believe they would look like theese - obviously well trained, well equipped for an Imperial Guard standards and focused on camouflage so not another meatshields. Also, is the number 42 just coincidence or intentional refference to the Battle of the Gate 42? Still a nice work and moreover I'm happy for anything related to the sons of Corax.

No it's not Therion cohort, I was going to draw them but then decide try for start some ordinary army auxiliary guy from one of the thousands expedition fleets
And I agree with too modern look, but don't judge too hard, its one of my first warhammer art
do you think Imperial army Auxiliary regiments should look more like those new solar auxiliary models?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Epifairos In reply to Igor-Zhovtovsky [2017-05-03 19:17:23 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes. Ravens got at least two expeditionary fleets and the exiled one with the former Shadow lord so there is a good chance of having different Imperial army regiments...
Well, you caught me a bit off guard here . After reading some materials, it seems that some followed the Solar auxiliae models and some were more like later Imperial Guard. I would expect something more unified from 31st millenium since the Imperium was at its peak but it seems that it was much the same as ever. For example The Byzantine Janissaries (or whatever were they spelled) following the 63rd Expeditionary fleet would suggest some kind of distinctive look. So to answer the question: Hell, I don't know . Most of the Imperial guard is using the Cadian model while some follow their homeworld tradition so it could be somehow similar with the Imperial auxiliae. Solar auxilia is an elite force, virtually defending the heart of the Imperium and therefore should be better equipped than regular army. You know, same designs but the stormtroopers are more armored with more specialised equipment.

I like solar auxilia models they looks really cool, but I agree too well equipped for regular imperial army.
Hope to make in near future few sketches for Therion cohort or other heresy time regiments
Thanks for the feedback

Raven Guard Auxiliaries? Cool. I guess that explains such high tech gear for a Imperial Guardsman. Since their homeworld of Deliverance is a advanced forge world.

us far as I know Auxiliary squads (like solar auxilia or legions army auxilia) was an elite forces, unlike regular 40k guardsmen

Well, actually not quite the case. The Imperialis Auxilia (or just Imperial Army) was the direct predecessor to both "current" Imperial Guard and Imperial Navy. Their regular ground infantry were pretty much like M41-era Imperial Guard (Astra Militarum in high gothic) infantry - with rank-and-file troops, NCOs and lower officers using the same lasguns and flak armour as standard. The difference was in that Imperialis Auxilia have unified command chain for both ground troops and space vessels. Imperial Army was organized into Battle Groups, each under a general or an admiral, that had direct command over both captains of space vessels and commanding officers of ground troops' regiments.
There was actually an elite division, called the Solar Auxilia. Its troops donned void-sealed carapace armour and wielded Kalibrax-pattern lasrifles, with superior range and power over STC-standard lasgun (that was known as "Mars-Tellurian MKII lascarbine" in M31 and as "M-G Short pattern lasgun" in M41).
However, the trooper on your magnificent drawing could as well be not a regular Imperialis Auxilia grunt, but rather a serf (human servant) of the Raven guard astartes legions. And by virtue of being auxiliary trooper for the Astartes legion he could have access to advanced weaponry like the hellgun in his hands.

The difference is that the Imperial army at the time was made out of very well equipped soldiers who were supposed to keep up with astartes during the crusade (And indeed, even if the astartes legions were much larger than todays chapters, astartes couldn't hold territory, nor could they be present everywhere at once even on a single planet, so large swarms of soldiers were always with them, doing the large frontline fighting while the space marines went deep beyond ennemy lines). They had a better form of lasgun (I do not remember the name, but it was a lasgun with stronger armour piercing capacity, altough larger, as long as a musket), widespread access to plasma weapons, and some of them even had volkite weapons.
25% of the Imperial Army were Solar Auxilia, and those were killing machines on the level of current stormtroopers if not better. And those had a lot of volkite weapons, and were one of the few non space marine forces capable of fighting the astartes (provided they outnumbered them).

Imperialis Auxilia was the ancestor to modern day PDF. They were tasked with the defense and garrisson of captured worlds. As far as I know they were not actively taking part in the grand crusade and were not considered as soldiers of the Imperial Army, but as auxiliaries or militias.

And this guy here has Raven Guard symbols, so he must be from Therion Cohorts. Correct?

I like the design though the aesthetic doesn't necessarily fit with the future/medieval vibe of 30k and 40k. Still awesome job though. Wish 40k had more of an aesthetic like this.

What medieval aesthetic are you talking about?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cromwell300 In reply to SteelLegionnaire [2016-06-04 01:33:48 +0000 UTC]

The entire imperial culture is very medieval in how it is portrayed. Space marine armor is very similar to knight's armor, and if you look at the imperial army units on Forge World they look very dated or renaissance ish

Like I said I like it. 40k's medieval aesthetic does got a little over the top some times, and its nice to see you adding a dash of realism with this depiction
