Description OMG! ~rei-chan and I thought of a name for our manga project! secular.genesis! Isn't that awesome!? I'll let you think of the meaning of that now

So, here's like the very crappy layout for pages one to five D: No dialogues. I find it adds a myterious atmosphere. I dunno. There's Shichio and Akima in there! (OMG, Shichio is an android!! *hyper attack*) Layout critiques wanted! There's suppose to be buildings on the title page, but ~rei-chan is going to be doing the structures since I suck at that.

EDIT: Oh yeah! The legs/feet and hands between the upper and lower rows of pages are just me making myself some guides on how to draw certain things since I'm sooo bad at drawing small!

---

Approximate time: 1-2 hours (ideas are hard to come by!!!)
Medium: mechanical pencil 0.5 (It's called ZEBRA! : D)
Music: Dir En Grey - Akuro no Oka; Miyavi - Papa Mama ~Nozomanu Baby~

Oh yah, I also forgot to add...

When she's typing, you might want to choose a different angle for the typing hands. From this perspective it's just a little hard to tell what she's doing... It would help if the sketch was a little darker, so we'd see more detail.

Or that might just be me, seeing as there isn't too much detail in this yet.
Well, there's my two cents. Ching!

Ideas are hard to come by...! So hard, sometimes it makes me sick.

Hey, I hope to see more progress on this soon.

I don't think you have to repeat the keypad in the first page, especially since it's generally from the same angle. The door opening would be enough to suggest that it was linked to the keypad. The second page with all the details must be really cool if you manage to pull it off nicely and balanced.

I wasn't sure what was the hands doing in the 3rd page at first then I figured it to be typing. I think you should add in a monitor shot or change the angle so you can view both the hands and the monitor screen (or whatever device that may be used to display info). I don't understand at all what is in the panel below it.

The fourth page is where you wanted to show the android's awakening. I feel like it's a waste of space, since you established a mug shot in Page 2. Eyes cloed followed by eyes opened in two similar frames is enough in my opinion, and something else will have to be added into this page. Maybe a transition panel to link it to the next page?

Why don't you post this in OMU's Manga Workshop forum? I'm sure jr and Prof Az can help you a whole lot more with the panels than I could.

There isn't really a monitor that goes with the keyboard thing, but I could add a virtual one! I'm not quite sure how to fit it in with her typing though :\ Any suggestions?

The panel below that is Akima watching the water level in the tube drop. I know, I know, lack or details and definition! D:

At the moment, I'm not quite sure of what to add to the fourth page. I was trying to show that he opened his eyes after the water was drained.

The fifth page is more like a sort of 'splash page' D: I dunno what they're called! Erm, the story really begins after that. Everything before was somewhat of a prologue. So, I can't really see how a transition could be put up between that and page 4.

Thanks for the crit, amade Always so insightful!

The monitor: How 'bout those holographic ones, which you type directly on? Perhaps too cliched already.

One idea for the transition panel can be an ariel view of the labroom/lab building. Sort of like the viewer is leaving the scene and goes to the next page. Currently, between the awakening and the splash page there might be a confusion as the prologue is suddenly interrupted.

Maybe just a holographic one I do want a sort 'table' for the keypad... (you seem to think a lot of things are cliched by the way XD..)

I'll try out the aerial view of the labroom. It'll feel dramatic! : D Maybe the page that comes right after can be a black page which leads to a two-page splash page thing? What do you think?

By the way, I find that sudden interruptions adds a sort of mysterious feel to the subject I dunno.. a lot of my stories start like that.

Actually, yeah... A lot of things in this world I would readily classify them as cliched

Interruptions can be good especially when it's surprising but not confusing. You can say that the transition scene is the mode of interruption. Just now it was dark and gloomy, suddenly it's outside and the sun is shining.

A two page splash page would be contained in a spreadsheet. I think that's what you meant. I can't be sure as you didn't state where the first page starts (whether on the left page of the book or the right). From the panels direction it's read from left to right that far I know.

The way a page is laid out opposite another plays an important role too as you don't want the reader to suddenly jump from the first page to the next due to panels being too paralel to one another or having the attention grabbing panel on the wrong part of the spreadsheet. It's hard to elaborate without some visuals on this matter.

From some observation, most title/chapter pages (not the cover) starts on the leading or "front of door page" which is the page you're about to turn. For right to left Japanese Manga it's the left page but for left to right reading flow it's the right page. You associate the turning of the pages as you would open a book. What would you see first?

There are several theories for this but I guess you'll still have to work up your own formula and see if it fits and works in your style.

The pages start on the right page, sorry I didn't mention that earlier (in this case, the added black page as the transition page would be necessary)

What do you mean by a spreadsheet by the way? (like.. two pages in an open book?)

I'm not really going for the traditional kind of manga either (although there probably will be a sort of splash page for the table of contents, then the prologue, then the splash page for chapter 1).

Yes. A spreadsheet is how you look at two pages together side by side as you would in a book. This of course, does not apply to online comics/mangas where you can only view one page at a time.

Personally, I draw up my pages as if I would actually have them printed in a book (quite a far-fetched dream there ). Also, it's fun playing with the dynamism of the panel designs and you also can make 2 page splashes that way.

since there is an android, i will take a wild stab in the dark and say it has something to do with the beginning of something that will last for centuries.

well anyway back to picture. nice layout gets all your thoughts across very well. i only have one suggestion, when you start on the pages themselves, be a bit more dynamic with the layout. by dynamic i mean vary the angles, the shapes of the panels and break some panels.

by break i mean have something within the panel extend out of the border, an example would be having sime wires and tubing break through the borders of the panel with the stasis chamber thingy or have shichio's head not completely in the boundaries in the second to last page.

remember boundaries were made to occasionally be broken.

okay that is all from me i hope i was some help.

You missed an important definition of secular! 'Unholy'! Also, for the word genesis, I would rather use a synonym such as 'creation', therefore 'Unholy Creation'. I hope that clears things up for the title Nice guess though! (It doesn't relate to something that lasts that long though, hm, we've yet to decide!)

Thanks for the suggestions for the panelling. I actually don't like really tightly places things (I mean the limitting to the boundaries thing), so as much as possible, I'll try to get the figures to stretch outside of the lines.

I can't believe i forgot about the synonyms of the two words, both of which make more sence then my guess.

Wait a second

are you saying Shichio might be destroyed? NOOOOOOOO!!!!
*sigh* I'm done now.

well anyway, i am glad to find that someone else has a similar veiw as mine when it comes to paneling,
for anyone curious my veiw is that boundaries restrict images to work within a box most of the time, why work inside a box when the outside is so much more fun.

just make sure you and rei-chan have fun with this project.
if you are enjoying the project, you will work on the project. if you work on the project i get to read a new comic online (yay).

so needless to say (yet i still say it) i hope to see more of this comic soon

I hope to draw more of it too Let's just pray that I (or rei for that matter) don't become a lazyass in the middle of it XD... (Although, so far we're having way too much fun with it right now )

And don't worry, Shichio won't be destroyed. He's too cute for that!!! D:
