Never actually thought of him as chubby but yes I also see John and the rest of the kids as the adorable small 13-year-olds they are. (It's just kind of hard for me to draw them that way myself XD)

Yeah, the kids actual looks are up to debate, but Iki's designs are pretty much engrained in my subconcious now. (I guess she was really influential in the fandom... such a shame I joined it so late.)

Yeah same here, I mean I kind of have my own headcanon images for them as well, but they're pretty close to Ikimaru's designs. I remember I was completely blown away by her artwork in the Terezi: Remem8er flash (it probably helped that that was and still remains a very emotional flash for me ;_; ) and I found her tumblr through the artists' credits and have loved all her art ever since (I mean, except for her DirkJake art, since unfortunately I don't like that ship while it was one of her favorites >_<)
I get that feel, I was late joining the fandom too, but I also see it as a good thing since I was able to read all of Homestuck straight through without waiting for updates, and wasn't as let down (much) by the way things transpired in the story near the end as I know a lot of the old fans were.

Let's be honest, Homestuck was always to big for itself and couldn't possibly do a satifying conclusion under the weight of its 1000 plot threads.
But yea, having a more distanced perspective ain't bad either. Like, now we know which fanfics to get into, and which ones will never be finished.

Yup, pretty much. It reminds me a little of The Dark Tower books - I love that series to bits but it had a similar problem of becoming just too big for its own good and the entire last half became a mess; and like Homestuck, even though I would've liked a better ending, I have a hard time thinking of how else it could have been done. So I just learned to accept it as it is. In a way, both The Dark Tower's ending and Homestuck's ending were fitting for the kind of stories they were (specifically how meta they both are and how their endings kind of pushed through the boundaries of the fourth wall rather than wrap up in a standard and neat way the way a typical "proper" story would).
As for fanfics, I'm not big on them but yeah there's also that XD

Yeah, I feel similar about the ending of Evangelion. Sometimes a story straight up abandons the plot, and that can be... interesting at least.
(I always start reading fanfics that are unfinished since years anyway, so maybe I'm just a masochist.)

That reminds me, I actually did read two Homestuck fancomics before and they were both unfinished - one was where John was a ghost that only Dave could see and everyone but John forgot everything that had happened in Homestuck, another was Dave talking to his Bro's ghost (I'm assuming) while Dirk and Alpha Dave watch from the sidelines. They were both pretty good, but were sadly abandoned before they even progressed that far.

OMG. It's weird to really think that... well, that's what John and the others must have looked like at the start of the story, when they were all 13 uO_o Even in Ikimaru's fanarts, they always tend to 'feel' older.

I think it's also because so much weird, unsettling and downright awful stuff starts happening early on. It's hard, wrapping your head around the concept of a bunch of thirteen-year-olds going through all that shit ^^u
