I honestly didn't have any "portfolios" that I looked at for inspiration, but I did look at several graphic design books, as well as looking at some wonderful graphic design stuff people here submitted to dA. I would recommend just browsing peoples work... even if its something completely different from what your trying to accomplish... its was usually gets me thinking! hope it helps!

I love the window.
They symbolism of it definately ties the entire thing together.
Beautiful work, even if it is just for a portfolio.

3d stuff? there is no 3dstuff on the template here. The cover is a photograph I took. The only program I am familiar that does do 3d renderings is Sketch Up - you can get it from Google.
Thx, glad you liked the sketches.

Waao, sexy!!! Me liking!!
Yeah, looks good bro. Clear and very readable laout. Careful not to fall into a monochromatic scheme.
Also, dunno how much info you'll display for each project, but don't foget to summarize what you got out of each one, that way employer/faculty can identify right away what you've learned, especialy if there's speeding through it and dont have time to analyse each drawing.
Keep up the good work. You're on the right path to do something wonderful...

Ok having done now 2 portfolios, one for submission and one for re-working my own stuff I have to comment lol. First how am I reading this? I understand the first is your cover page, and so forth, but the one with your logo, where is that being placed? I know this sounds odd but I guess thats where page numbers can help. Your table of content page is absolutely gorgeous. I'm just wowed with it however I am wondering if your over top banner look is a bit too thick, b/c while this sounds dumb, you lose space to it. Another question I have, is this portfolio for you or for school, a job and so forth. You probably know, for jobs, a portfolio should never be long so while your sketches for a case study lets say are stunning, a firm may not be that interested. That make sense? Two more things lol. Your cover page, I still think its gorgeous but what if the photo was the entire page and not like a still. Second and more importantly, whats the scale of this? What page sizes are you considering? I think its gorgeous and my lord props on your sketches.

hehe... let me explain. The second page, the one with my logo, comes right after the cover - its more of transition page so your not hit with the contents page all at once... its not neccessary but I like having it.
The original contents page did have page numbers listed, but I guess once I reworked it I completely forgot to put them back in... good catch and I better get those back in.
The top banners are fairly large and I do lose space, but alot of my stuff is very horizontal so it seems to fit so far. Plus I like having something continuous runnning through the length of the portfolio, but I completely understand what you mean and if it comes down to it I might just make it smaller.
The portfolio is both for job and school... try to kill two birds with one stone. The future employers will probably careless about the sketches, but I think they might appreciate the various things I do - graphic design, photography, sketching - so maybe they will understand them being in (maybe they won't, haha). The portfolio's main purpose is for school right now - its basically an application for a scholarship, if I get it it'd be $2000 which would be nice but also a summer internship in Seattle with Miller-Hull architects (a big Northwest Firm) which would be just an awesome opportunity if at all possible.
I will definitely look at making the picture on the cover page as big as the page, but I believe my reasoning there was just merely the original picture size/quality. I believe the picture was originally like 3000 ppi but at 72 dpi, so when I import into my cover which is set to 150 dpi its fairly small. I don't mind it not being the whole cover size, but I did felt a little awkward with the amount of empty space on the cover - I am hoping its a balance of negative space though.
The size of the portfolio is a standard 8x11 in a horizontal format, so I can get duplications w/o being a hassel (even though I will never trust Kinkos with anything that is a reflection of me, haha).
Thx again Nezzy... lets see your portfolio!!!!!!!!!

lol my portfolio is constantly a work in progress and no where near done. I'm also using a standard 8.5x11 to make my life easier and lord yes NEVER trust kinkos or staples. Those *line of swear words* nearly destroyed my portfolio. I had to stand by the girl as she made the pages. I like your logo acting as a transition page but wonder if it would almost be a better back cover page, just as a nice finishing touch. I think if you keep working on it with the mindset of that a firm would eventually see it, any graduate school can appreciate that as after all its the eventual point. I've heard of Miller-Hull, big time firm, hope you get it!

You know I just re-read your little blurb asking about how to build like a portfolio box? Honestly, and trust me on this, its not worth the time. You cannot beat a simple black cover which actually kinkos or staples can give you. I saw alot of people have gorgeous work in their portfolios and the complexity of the actual thing, took away from it. One great one I did see though was a guy took foam core, carved out his name, and then added like black fabric. If I imagine that with your logo, it would be amazing.
