Description
The Laika class is the successor of the Yasen class submarines, serving has a lighter and cheaper version of the expensive Yasen. It will replace the Akula and Sierra class SSN's and will be the main submarine in the russian navy by mid-century.
The submarines are reported to combine the roles of multi-purpose and strategic submarines, being able to use both cruise and balistic missiles depending on the task and modular configuration. The submarines will have a smaller displacement than the current fourth-generation Yasen class, and incorporate the double hull design with the outer hull made of composite materials. The composites are also expected to be used for control surfaces and propultion system.
The main armament is to include the 3M-54 Kalibr and P-800 Oniks anti-ship cruise missiles as well as the 3M 22 Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles.
The vessels are also projected to be armed with MIRV armed ballistic missiles currently in developlent. According to President of the United Shipbuilding Corporation Alexei Rakhmanov, the submarines are to be highly unified in their key components in order to substantially reduce the costs for the Russian Defense Ministry.
The version represented here is the Attack / Cruise missile version. The SSBN version will have a longer mid-section to accommodate ICBM's.
