nice work on the typhoon.
the catepillar drive does work, but not that well in practice, doesn't produce enough power to make it worthwhile to use.

I'll never forget how Jack Ryan's friend in the movie "The Hunt for Red October" summed up the Typhoon's powers
"In 1962, I helped my father build a bomb shelter because someone puut some nuclear missiles on Cuba. this thing could but a few dozen ICBMs on the East Coast and not a soul would get any warning."

Great Art, comrade. Just wish you could do the interior, but I reckon that's classified.

The Akula class SSBNs (known by NATO as the "Typhoon" class) are a case study in excesses.
They're bigger, heavier, and a LOT more heavily-armed than an SSBN Submarine needs to be; and consequently, very expensive.
It's sort of ironic that the Soviet Union would build such a vessel, given how it's tanks and aircraft have been consistently smaller, lighter, and more lightly-armed on average than most of their Western counterparts.
That's not to say they weren't good boats, mind you --- rather, that there was more of a "my sub is bigger than yours" thing going on, than a purely objective design.

You bring up a good point (though I'm no naval engineer), though if memory serves, Soviet tanks were as heavily armed as their western counterparts (they adopted the 125 mm gun when America was using the 105 mm, for example). They were smaller though.
But, people have their reasons when coming up with designs. I've read the Typhoon's size means added crew comfort and much longer mission time potentially...but the disadvantages are obvious.

my dad was a sono-tech on a US Fast Attack, and despite their looks, the Typhoons are deadly quiet. Not only did they have allot of comfort for the crew, they boasted thick armor designed to withstand a couple hits from out torpedos (long enough to get a missile off towards DC or New York). Now, if something like the Red October had ever been built, we would have never been able to locate them easily.

I wouldn't doubt the resiliency of the submarine (compared with other submarines--even during the Second World War, larger submarines like the German Type IX could better withstand depth charging than smaller models).
I've heard the large size worked in its favor when it came to noise (better absorption or something to that effect).

Wasn't there a plan to convert the whole fleet of Typhoons into cargo ships after they're retired? They're the only sub (that I can think of) large enough to carry alot of cargo. :3
