The Graney class finds its origins in the fall of the Soviet Union. With the first call for a new nuclear attack submarine made in 1993. However the economic chaos of the post-Soviet era economy led to the Graney design being held up for nearly a decade. The dawn of the 21st Century and Russia's decaying submarine fleet called for the building of a new attack submarine. Following the completion of the first Borei SSBNs, construction began on the Graney fleet.

By 2015 the first four Graney SSNs entered service in the Russian Northern Fleet. It features the latest Russian weaponry and computer systems. New towed sonar and senor arrays are a generation improved over the modified Akula class boats. The addition of cruise missile slots behind the sail give the Graney a long range ground attack role missing from previous Russian SSNs. In addition to land attack cruise missiles, Ship to Ship missiles can also be carried besides being launched from the torpedo tubes.

American submarines and carrier groups have already encountered Graney in the North Atlantic. The cruise missile suite carried by the Graney suggests that they can carry out an anti-carrier role once held by the Oscar SSGN. The Gerald Ford operating in the Mediterranean was shadowed by a Graney for nearly a day. Undoubtedly the Russian commander was testing the Graney's ability to penetrate the carrier's ASW screen.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that an American Virginia class SSN engaged in a tracking duel with the new Russian sub. According to the same reports the American and Russian subs were equal in performance. At least eight Graney SSNs are in service with the Russian Northern Fleet. Another four are expected to be built then transfered to the Russian Pacific Fleet.

For the moment it appears that the Graney is for Russian use only. However Iran and Venezuela have expressed repeated interest into purchasing a Graney variant. US officials oppose the sail of the submarine in its full condition, it is unknown whether or not the Russian will make the Graney available for export.

..............................

My verision of the long awaited Graney class sub. Putin claimed that two boats would be built starting 2009 or maybe eariler. Anyway who knows what they will actually build. Enjoy!
