Description     The lesser, western, or common katabo is by far the most abundant of their genus in the known world. The cold currents north of Pakardia prevent regular venturing into the Crescent Sea, though the few who do are integrated into the Crescent population. Usually the eastern or crescent katabo is recognized as a distinct species, with larger average size and a generally darker coloration, though their uninhibited reproduction does lead some to suggest they are only distinct subspecies or perhaps even just different populations. Eastern katabo along the east coast of Ni'Khar are similar to Crescent katabo and may be where the species designation is more reasonable, and the low tolerance of cold reinforces the separation of these two populations.

Common katabo are a regular sight near reefs. Their serpentine forms are perfect for marauding through nooks and crannies, grabbing anything they think they can swallow. Having a far less demanding metabolism than the catapancetid mosasaurs, katabo are much better at sharing space with others of their kind, and it is not uncommon to see female katabo (presumably related animals) hunting together, with some flushing out game for the others to attack. Males, however, are far less tolerant of each other, and readily attack each other. Both sexes are extremely violent with each other, though for females these fights are rarely fatal. Males on the other hand will kill intruders to their territory. This aggression is muted if they enter open water, as even the largest males are easy pickings for any number of meadow or channel shark, mosasaur, or cetacean.
