Rebirth - Prologue

The slate of the Ancient Temple felt warm against her skin. She kept quiet, with her main mission on her mind, as she weaved through the ancient structure in the looming darkness. Every obstacle she overcame, each abandoned room, was yet another step closer to her destiny. She swiftly pulled herself on top of a fallen pillar, and dropped over to the other side. Holding her satchel tightly, she continued to the next corridor.
     Her muscles ached from the time she had spent in the temple ruins. She had not eaten or rested for several days, although her pure determination had lifted the doubts that had clouded her mind for many years. A sudden hope had filled her heart, as she pushed her way through an opening in the chamber. The bright light burned her eyes, causing her to clamp them shut tightly. After a few moments, she opened them, and put her hand up the shield them from the light.
     Statues of The Gods rose from the ground in two columns, down the center of the room. Torches hung in their brackets on the walls, between each of the chiseled Gods. Strange scripts of foreign languages were scrawled all over the walls, floor and even the tall ceiling, which seemed to reach far into the sky, even though the structure wasn't towering in appearance, under the rough mountain range.
     She removed her hood, exposing her beautiful facial features, as she looked around the enormous room. "Amazing," she whispered, noticing the clean cut slate walls and ground, "this is the only room that isn't ruined." She raised her head to lift her gaze to the farther side of the area, "Could it be?" She breathed, stunned, "The Lost Altar of Asyn?"

    The night sky seeped through a small opening in the center of the ceiling. She begun walking across the room, watching as the moon slowly drifted across the sky, and rested amongst the stars. The moonlight flooded into the temple, lighting up the stone ground, making it glow from within. She rushed over to the far side of the chamber, and stood in front of a statue of Chixe, The Goddess of Rebirth.
    The stone beneath her feet hummed and glowed brighter, as the walls of the chamber shook violently. The torches swayed strongly, and many fell from their brackets. They radiated a brilliant blue flame, before dimming and then disappearing completely, as if soft whispers had gently blown them out. The moon passed by opening in the ceiling, and the only light now was from the intense luminance stemming from the Earth, penetrating the slate flooring.
    The winds howled outside, conjuring up a harsh storm. She raised her head, "this is it," she announced to the dark sky, "this is the moment," taking a step back from the statue, she exhaled and pulled the orb from her satchel, "it's time."
